It's always a powerful experience seeing our Truth Retreats participants learn about and experience the history of injustice in our country. After our tour at the Legacy Museum, we asked everyone to share one word about their experience. Here was the result.

It's time to face the truth about our past, and move toward a better and brighter future.

In honor of #BlackHistory month, we want to highlight just a few of the many influencial figures in civil rights in America. •W.E.B. Du Bois: W.E.B. Du Bois was a founding member of NAACP. Du Bois published many influential works describing the plight of Black Americans and encouraged Black people to embrace their African heritage even as they worked and lived in the United States.•Thurgood Marshall: Thurgood Marshall was one of America's foremost attorneys. As chief of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, he led the legal fight against segregation, argued the historic 1954 case Brown v. Board of Education, and ultimately became the nation's first Black Supreme Court Justice.•Ida B. Wells: As a dedicated journalist and feminist, Ida B. Wells used investigative reporting to shed light on the horrors of the lynching of Black Americans in the Jim Crow South. Her work contradicted the common accepted belief that only rapists and other criminals were killed, rather than just victims of racism. Wells was also a cofounder of the NAACP and worked alongside Susan B. Anthony during the women's suffrage movement.•A. Philip Randolph: As a trade unionist and passionate civil rights advocate, A. Philip Randolph created the first successful Black trade union and led them to (reluctant) acceptance into the American Federation of Labor.•Ella Baker: Ella Baker was a key organizer for Martin Luther King Jr.’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference. She went on to found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, to prioritize nonviolent protest. She also helped to organize the 1961 Freedom Rides, and aided in registering Black voters.
