[Walmart Building ‘Systemic Change’ to Supply Chain]Walmart’s burgeoningSpark delivery networkcontinues to expand rapidly. The numbers of third-party drivers using the service tripled from June 2022 to June 2023, covering 84 percent of U.S. households with 17,000 pick-up points. But a new report suggests that Walmart is having trouble efficiently fulfilling the influx of orders. According to Insider, wait times have become an issue for delivery drivers. One driver told the outlet that he had to wait in aWalmartparking lot for the better part of an hour for a store employee to bring orders out to his car.Four contract Spark drivers told Insider that because of the uncertainty around wait times, it’s hard for them to know which orders are worth taking. Walmart said that the report, and examples offered, don’t represent most Spark-fulfilled orders.“Orders are typically dispensed in 10 minutes or less. We are focused on maximizing drivers’ earnings opportunities, so we consider the time it takes to dispense orders when determining earnings for each trip,” a Walmart spokesperson told Sourcing Journal. “We’re constantly adding new features to make the pick-up process more efficient and encourage drivers to continue sharing their feedback with us.”Walmart said it gives drivers visibility through an order status tracker, and employs technology that can help drivers optimize their store arrival time. It also continuously refines the order staging and dispensing process, it added. When aSparkdriver accepts an order, a deadline to report to their local Walmart flashes on the Spark app, which often hovers around 10 minutes. Delivery orders appear once an hour for drivers, so if a store employee takes too long, the driver risks being out delivering an order when the next hourly drop happens. The retail giant appears to be developing the Spark Driver app with driver pain points in mind. In June, when the Spark program reached its five-year mark, Nav Chadha, vice president, on-demand delivery at Walmart, said recent program upgrades were a “direct response to driver feedback.”For example, the order status tracker also includes trip and post-trip information, which can help drivers track their earnings progress and incentives, Chadha said.“We’ve improved the app and earnings screens to increase transparency and give drivers additional visibility into the status of their earnings on a weekly, daily and trip level,” Chadham said. “We’re also deploying in-app features to mitigate the potential for fraudulent use of the platform. Drivers receive random checks that prompt them to verify their identity or device.”The company aims to grow the delivery network. At the Goldman Sachs retail conference last month,Walmart CEO Doug McMillonsaid the retailer wants to give store associates more delivery opportunities.…Source: Sourcing Journalhttps://lnkd.in/gdqjCzMS

Why Customers Love Businesses That Offer #BODFS ?Customers visit a business’ website, find the product(s) they are looking for, and go through the checkout process. At the end of the process, they learn delivery will be delayed because the product is out of stock or shipping from some far-off destination. Frustrating!BODFS (Buy Online, Deliver From Store), on the other hand, lets customers get their items quickly. The products very well may be delivered from a local operation, so it’s reasonable to expect delivery within a couple of hours. Best of all, customers get their urgent purchases without leaving their location.Even if the customer has transportation and the time to get to the store/fulfillment center, they may need oversized items that don’t fit into their vehicle. BODFS eliminates this concern, so customers won’t have to consider #logistics. This solution adds convenience and removes worries from customers.Read on to learn why #distributors should optimize #LastMileDelivery for BODFS → https://lnkd.in/g7mPVsJG

An interesting Article about how the Last mile industry is taking the extra step to be technically advance and keep up with the trend. While the idea of 'delivery' isn't novel, purchasers are progressively favoring delivery services. This preference is driving the development of an entirely new system, where the convenience of receiving items at home, including both online and traditional retail products, has transitioned from being an extravagant option to an integral aspect of our daily routine.

Can Same-Day Delivery Overcome Its Costs and Complexities?A survey from UPS-owned Roadie finds retailers still seeking to determine whether the sender or customer should cover the costs of same-day delivery, as the practice makes the last mile “more expensive, more complex and (sometimes) less efficient, placing more pressure on companies to meet customer expectations without breaking the bank.”Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eZQqg3E6Bob Amster "Seldom does anyone really ‘need’ same-day service and, if one does, one should pay the premium that makes the transaction a win/win for provider and consumer. A good deal is a deal with which both parties are satisfied and, if retailers are willing to continue to lose money on some of these services, they are racing to the bottom. Unsustainable in the long term."Trevor Sumner "The desire for same-day delivery is more about competing with brick-and-mortar than Amazon… The economic unlocks from technology are coming, but it is still years away."Brandon Rael "While the expectations are mounting for same-day delivery, in most scenarios, customers are more than happy to have the less costly option of next-day or two-day shipping."

What’s one of the easiest ways to increase your checkout conversion rate and revenue? Optimize the delivery checkout experience - Why?➡️ 31% of shoppers always leave a brand or retailer's site to check if the same product is available with faster and/or cheaper shipping on Amazon.➡️ Shipping costs and a lack of delivery options cause >48% of online shoppers to abandon their carts.➡️ Free shipping is the number one driver of online shopping. Here’s a brilliant (or perhaps not so brilliant) example of why it matters. After putting in my delivery zip code during checkout I was given the attached delivery options. However, I was disappointed with the results, and ended up bouncing, as I’m sure many others did as well. Here’s why…1️⃣ The free delivery option doesn’t show an estimated delivery date or window. For all I know, the free delivery option may take 10+ days so I’ll surely check competitors and Amazon before proceeding.2️⃣ All the other delivery options have unclear delivery dates too. The company has my zip code so for at least FedEx Home Delivery and FedEx 2-day they know the exact date my order should arrive and should share that during checkout.3️⃣ Both FedEx Home Delivery and FedEx 2-day show delivery is possible the next day. This is very confusing for the customer as they may need it immediately but unsure if it’s worth the price to pay for expedited delivery. 4️⃣ It’s clear this shipper doesn’t understand the cost-saving optimization opportunities, let alone the revenue-generating opportunities, that can be realized through e-commerce logistics. For example, if it’s indeed possible to deliver this order the next day using both ground or express, then the shipper is losing money by using an express method when a ground method would suffice. 5️⃣ Lastly, if this shipper puts this little effort into the customer-facing delivery checkout experience, who knows what other inefficiencies are happening in the backend.Without a doubt, this shipper is losing business and spending more than they should. You still have about 2 months before peak, that’s plenty of time to optimize your delivery checkout experience and maximize your revenue.#ecommerce #logistics #marketing Sources include ‘Santa Clara University and Maergo, State of Shipping Report 2022’ and ‘Shopify’.

Remember those days when you had to get into your car and drive to a store, then browse through aisles to find that thing you were shopping for and physically take it to the front desk to pay for it at these things called cash registers? Now, pretty much everything we need is a click away and shows up in neat little packages at the front door. A PricewaterhouseCooperssurvey this year revealed that nearly half of those polled intend to increase their online spending over the next six months.Read the full story in our latest edition! Local next-day delivery.Massive opportunity, but challenges exist. And the space is getting very crowded.First, let’s define local next-day delivery. The basic concept is packages are:shipped from a local store / FCORshipped from a regional FC-sorted to driver routes-delivered next day in a market / metro areaThere many variations of this model.-Ship from store (big box and mall-based)-Local (<50 mi) FC’s and MFC’s-Regional FC’s linehaul into a marketAnd it’s not a new concept. But inventory is moving closer to demand. And the local next-day opportunity is growing.Sortation and delivery capabilities are evolving. But there are barriers to growth.[more on this below]The retailer benefits are clear … or at least they should be.Provide low-cost, next-day customer delivery. It can be offered as free shipping, if well-executed.Sounds pretty straightforward, right? Not really.A few (of the many) things required:-FC’s in close proximity (< 300 mi) to large markets-Accurate distributed inventory (stores and FC’s)-Ability to show next-day EDD (PDP, checkout)-Flexible delivery providers-Package volume density-Sound SFS processesNot so straightforward.Due to the complexity, it requires intentional focus.Retailers rarely focus on local next-day volume. It’s a byproduct of volume shipped from an FC or store. But some are figuring this out.-Dick’s Sporting Goods-Tractor Supply-Best Buy-Fanatics-ChewyAnd there are plenty of delivery providers available. Some focus on local next day.-Veho-Hailify-UniUni-SpeedX-AxleHire-The FrontDoor CollectiveOthers have it as part of their regional coverage.-CDL-GLS-LSO-UDS-TForce-OnTrac-Optima-Pandion-Blue Streak-Better TrucksSame-day providers are adding next-day delivery.-Roadie-ShiptThere are providers offering middle mile and/or sortation capabilities, like:-WARP-Clearjet-CloudSort---Local next-day delivery. It might be the next big thing. There are many#technologysolutions to enable it.There are many delivery providers to execute it.But retailer inventory planning capabilities are lagging. So local next-day market growth is constrained.If/when growth is unlocked, it could disrupt the package delivery market.#retailing#ecommerce#logistics
