How much directions hair dye do I need? ›

If you're wondering how many tubs of Directions you'll need to get the best coverage, go by our rule of thumb: we recommend one tub for hair that's shoulder length. Directions Pre Colour Shampoo has been especially formulated to give you soft, shiny and manageable hair to work with.

Should I Use Directions Hair Dye On Wet Or Dry Hair? Directions are best used on hair that has been dried with a towel only. A small amount of moisture / slightly damp hair will ensure you get even coverage and get the best results.

Processing time is between 15 and 30 minutes, but this product will not damage your hair if left in longer (as it is a conditioning colour) this will give it more holding power, a plastic cap will contain the heat on the hair helping to achieve a better result.

If you have long thick hair I would suggest two 4 oz. Jars. But if you have short or thin hair, it should be enough.

Letting hair dye sit for too long

Don't worry! The hair dye has lost it's effect at some point, and won't have any impact after a certain amount of time. It's not possible for odd colours to appear after letting it sit for too long.

Baking soda is exfoliating, and dish soap can help to dissolve the dye. To use, combine gentle dish soap and baking soda to form a paste. Gently rub the paste over the stained area on your hands, and then rinse with warm water.

Permanent hair dye that needs a developer won't mix well with conditioner, and it can make the dye bond unevenly to your hair. You can use conditioner to make your fantasy color lighter, or even pastel. However, it might fade faster than usual.

The minimum and maximum amount of hair color is around 20ml to 80ml depending on the type of hair color and the length hair thickness of your hair. It's always best to purchase more than you think you'll need, especially if you have longer or thicker hair.

The general rule is to use one part of hair dye and two parts of developer (or 1:2) while mixing hair color. That means, if you have 2 oz of hair color, you should use 4 oz of a developer.

If your hair is longer than shoulder length or very thick (and if you're doing an all-over application), you may need two boxes to saturate your hair fully. Also, keep in mind that the ends of long hair tend to absorb more color, so you may need to reduce your processing time to prevent your color from going too dark.
