A story about Pretty Little Liars (2024)

The first A

Real identity : Mona Vanderwaal.

Three years after the disappearance of Alison DiLaurentis, her four friends, Aria Montgomery, Spencer Hastings, Emily Fields, and Hanna Marin each receive messages from someone calling themselves ‘‘A’’. Since Allison’s disappearance, the girls had drifted apart and had no idea that other people were receiving texts as well. The texts referenced secrets that only Alison would have known. At first, the messages were simply teasing and the girls suspected that their missing friend sent them. They knew she was most likely dead, but believed Alison to be the only one who knew those secrets. When Alison's body is discovered in her old backyard, the girls are baffled when they continue to receive text messages. At Alison's funeral, the girls are reunited and they find out that they've all been receiving weird messages. As the girls stand outside after the funeral ends, they all get a text saying, "I'm still here, bitches. And I know everything. –A".

From that point on, the messages take on a distinctly more threatening tone. Aria is given an ultimatum to tell her mother about her father's affair by midnight after the Foxy event, or "A" will do it for her. "A" continues to play life-altering games with the girls, such as encouraging suspicion of Spencer's involvement in Alison's death and outing Emily's sexuality to her conservative mother. However, "A" makes a mistake when texting Hanna on the night of Mona's birthday party. Instead of using the plain Blackberry she bought just for tormenting the girls, "A" accidentally uses her personal phone. Hanna, who has a new phone without all of her contacts registered, recognizes the number, compelling "A" to act before Hanna can reveal "A's" true identity to the others. "A" hits Hanna with an SUV, successfully destroying Hanna's phone and putting her into a coma that eventually leads to a temporary loss of memory. However, "A" knows that there is a very good chance Hanna will regain her memory.

Hanna's best friend, Mona Vanderwaal, informs the girls that she has also received texts from "A", drawing the five closer together in trying to figure out who their tormentor is. Mona subtly encourages Spencer's fears that her sister, Melissa, might be "A" as well as Alison's killer. During Hanna's party to celebrate her recovery, she suddenly regains her memory, revealing that Mona is "A". However, she, Emily, and Aria can't do much about it, because Spencer and Mona are on their way to the police station. After Spencer is warned about Mona by text, she tries to escape Mona's car, but Mona catches on quickly and diverts to a path in a more remote area of Rosewood.

Mona tells Spencer that she saw Alison launch a firework into Toby Cavanaugh's garage, blinding her friend Jenna and leaving Mona with a scar on her stomach. Mona also shares that she found Alison's diary among a pile of old DiLaurentis items that the St. Germains had left on the curb, discovering the girls' secrets that only Alison knew. Mona's motivation was to get revenge for Jenna's blindness — she didn't know that Jenna and Alison had planned together to launch the firework. Finally, Mona reveals that Ian Thomas killed Alison, due to Alison giving him an ultimatum to break up with Melissa — an incident Mona read about in Alison's diary. She then gives Spencer a chance to become "A" alongside her, suggesting that Hanna must not be remembering correctly, but Spencer refuses. The two fight at Floating Man's Quarry and Spencer accidentally pushes Mona, causing her to fall and for her neck to be trapped between the rocks.

The second "A"

Real Identity: Alison DiLaurentis.

Alison DiLaurentis felt her life was ruined by her twin sister, Courtney DiLaurentis, who was considered smarter and kinder than her. Alison began emotionally manipulating Courtney into pretending to be Alison, eventually tricking Courtney into pretending to strangle her. Courtney is sent to a mental hospital as a result and the ashamed DiLaurentis' erase all trace of her. Alison becomes Queen Bee at her new school. Courtney is allowed a short trip home to see her family, but while there sees Spencer, Hannah, Aria and Emily arguing outside and goes out to talk to them, which makes her parents believe she is Alison. The real Alison insists that's not true, but because of her manipulating Courtney into pretending to be her, her parents think she is lying. A vengeful Alison is taken away to the mental hospital.

The girls begin receiving messages from "A" again, terrifying them. They believe the messages to be a cruel joke at first, but then discover Ian Thomas's body — murdered by the second "A," who then steals Ian's body to convince everyone that the death was a hoax. "A" mocks the girls over text and pretends to be Ian on an online account, giving the girls information such as Spencer being the product of an affair between her father and Alison's mother. "A" causes Spencer to be scammed out of $2000, taunts Aria with photos, manipulates Hanna so she is sent to a mental hospital and forces Emily to go to Lancaster to look into Wilden. "A" sends the girls on many searches to try and find out who "A" could be and murders Jenna. They eventually plant all the evidence of a random person. The girls are fooled by this, happy it is over.

The town is introduced to Courtney DiLaurentis who is Alison's ill twin sister who was kept in many clinics and hidden from the world. Courtney reveals herself to the girls as actually being Alison and that Courtney was pretending to be her and that she was the one who ran into the random person and died. Aria is suspicious, along with Wilden and Melissa. Melissa knew about the twins for a while because Jason and Alison's stories didn't match up with what Jason told her. The suspected murderer has an alibi and people begin digging up suspicious things about Alison. Alison kidnaps Melissa and traps her in a cupboard next to Ian's dead body.

At Alison's house, all of the girls get drunk and re-enact the day Alison went missing, they wake up to find a letter revealing that Courtney took Alison's place when they were young and the person the girls were friends with was actually Courtney not Alison, and that Alison was sent to a mental hospital in her sisters place. When she came back, Alison killed Courtney. Alison then sets the house on fire with the girls in it, but they manage to escape with Melissa. The girls hope she was killed in the fire, but Emily left the door open for her.

After the third "A", Nick, has been arrested, Alison escapes to a house that even Nick had no clue about and uses all of Nick's money for plastic surgery. Then, under a new alias, she begins tormenting the girls again. An obsessed fan group starts harassing the girls and she hires one, Greg, to infiltrate the Liars. He starts dating Spencer in hopes to do this, which works. Alison also pretends to be a famous artist's secretary to ruin Aria's potential career. She attempts to drown Emily in a pool for rejecting her and then murders her girlfriend Jordan which causes Emily to become depressed. Alison then frames the girls for her torture and murder by covering a house they broke into with her blood and weapons, and the girls are arrested.

Alison is able to avoid the girls as they attempt to find her before they are imprisoned. Alison is elated to discover she has caused Emily to drown herself and make Aria flee the country. Little did she know, Emily faked her death and managed to track Alison to her mother's house where she was hiding out. Alison confronts Emily with a gun and the two fight, with Emily holding off Alison long enough for the police to arrive. Alison is then arrested and the girls are exonerated.

The third "A"

Real Identity: Nick Maxwell.

A third "A" begins tormenting the girls. Emily hopes it's Alison, and the rest of the girls hope it's not. The new "A" torments them about "The Jamaica Thing", Spencer's framing of Kelsey, Hanna's framing of Madison, and Emily's baby. "A" reveals that they killed Tabitha, not Aria, which means they have killed four people total - the other three being Gayle, Kyla, and Graham - and have injured many more, which makes this "A" the most violent yet. The girls suspect this "A" isn't just Alison, as she would not be strong enough to kill and hurt so many people by herself and begin to suspect she has an accomplice.

The girls are lured to a basem*nt where Alison reveals that she is alive and that the third "A" is not her, but Nick Maxwell. Nick was Courtney's older boyfriend who met the real Alison at their shared mental clinic and has introduced himself to the girls as different people throughout their lives: Phineas, who sold Spencer drugs and got her addicted to them, eventually causing her to frame Kelsey for drugs; Jackson, a bartender who refused to help Hanna, causing her to get into a car crash with Madison; Olaf, Aria's Icelandic friend who stole a painting with her; Derrick, Emily's colleague who she would regularly gossip to. Nick and Alison have put a shrine to Alison in the basem*nt and are going to make it seem as if the girls have killed themselves in honour of Alison. They leave and flood the basem*nt with poisonous gas, but Nick is found and arrested by the police and the girls are saved. Alison escapes and abandons Nick.

Nick is later visited in prison by the girls and tells them Alison may be at his grandma's house or something connecting to her may be there.

Pretty Little Liars

"A" began torturing Alison by sending her gifts, threats and soon attacking her while wearing a zombie costume on Halloween night 2008. "A" continued to mess with Alison and her mother, Jessica DiLaurentis, who believes "A" to be Spencer Hastings. After Alison's disappearance, "A" went away for a year but after the corpse of Bethany Young (believed to be Alison at the time) was found, she re-emerged. "A" began sending the Liars messages about things only Alison knew about them and soon began messing with their parents. Doctor Anne Sullivan had previously dealt with the person behind the hoodie and when "A" trashed her office she immediately recognized the person. She almost exposes her identity to the Liars but "A" kidnaps her and went as far as to threaten her son's life. But the Liars are still close to figuring it out and during the second half of season two they manage to get a hold of "A's" phone. They hatch a plan to catch her with this and it works. They find out that "A" had a lair at the Lost woods resort and Spencer and Mona ("A's" newest victim) head over there and find a room full of pictures of Alison and the girls along with a sketch of "A's" costume to the ball, the Black Swan. However, Spencer begins to notice other clues and soon realizes "A" is right there with her. She turns around to see Mona in a black hoodie, who reveals herself as "A". She kidnaps Spencer and gives her an opportunity to join the "A" team but Spencer declines and the two get into a fight, where Mona is pushed off of a cliff. Though Mona survives, she is sent to Radley Sanitarium for medical assistance. While in the psychiatric hospital, Mona takes up a partnership with a new accomplice that starts off the second game. After this, Mona became another henchman in the "A" hierarchy, obeying the orders of Big A, known as Red Coat, the captain of the A-Team. Mona was kicked off of the A-Team in the season three finale.

Big A often hid out at a lair situated in Room A at an apartment building at Mayflower Hill and a mobile RV which was stolen but Toby gave it back to "A" in exchange for information about his mother's death. It is revealed that Red Coat had been hiding out in the basem*nt of the DiLaurentis house and drilled holes through the floor to spy on the family. In "'A' Is for Answers", the Liars are under attack by "A" who shoots Ezra Fitz on the rooftop. However, in the fifth-season premiere, the shooter is revealed to be Shana Fring who attempted to kill Alison but was later shoved off a stage by Aria and died from the impact. In the series' 100th episode,"A" planted a bomb in the Cavanaugh house which detonated, signaling her triumphant return to Rosewood. "A" later breaks into the Vanderwaal home and kidnaps Mona just as she is about to tell the Liars that Alison is "A" and covers up her kidnapping as a homicide. She then brings Mona to the Dollhouse and tortures her and forces her to dress up and act like Alison. Just as the Liars are being brought to jail, "A" kidnaps them and tortures them inside the Dollhouse. Inside, the liars discover that Big "A" is named Charlotte DiLaurentis. CeCe Drake reveals herself as "A" and tells her story; saying that she is transgender, was formerly known as Charles DiLaurentis, and became Charlotte DiLaurentis and later became "A" because the Liars were happy that Alison was gone. She worked with Sara Harvey and was also responsible for the "death" of Alison and the death of Wilden, and after telling her story, she is admitted to Welby State and her reign as "A" finally ends.

Five years later, Charlotte is released from Welby and murdered. A new "A", "A.D.", takes over and wants to find Charlotte's murderer. "A.D." is eventually discovered to be Alex Drake, the twin sister of Spencer Hastings and half-sister to Charlotte.

Original Sin

In Original Sin, A is revealed to be Archie Waters. Archie is the illegitimate son of Rose Waters and Marshall Clanton, whose clandestine affair during high school resulted in Rose's pregnancy with Archie and his twin sister, Angela. Rose never let Archie out of the house and kept his existence a secret due to a facial disfigurement. Later, Clanton became the Vice Principal of Millwood High School, and Rose returned so Angela could attend the school and have a proper education. He and Rose decided not to tell Angela his identity as her father. In high school, Angela desperately wanted to fit in and joined Davie Adams' popular group. The group often did their best to embarrass, humiliate, and degrade Angela.

When Angela was raped by Davie's boyfriend, Tom Beasley, Davie forced the group to turn their backs on her. Davie made sure everyone in the school treated her as invisible and worthless. During a New Year's Eve party in 1999, Angela committed suicide in public after her pleas for help were ignored by everyone.

22 years later, Archie takes the identity of "A" to help his father avenge Angela and begins killing people who are considered bullies.

The A-Team

The A-Team is a group of anonymous characters that worked together as "A". The team was led by Red Coat for a while. Toby Cavanaugh is the first of the members to be revealed,[1] though it is later revealed that he is a double agent. Spencer Hastings was the next, having joined the A-Team to find Toby. Both of them and Mona were kicked off in the third season finale.[2] Sara Harvey is eventually revealed as a member of the A-Team. She was the main accomplice to Charlotte and acted as a decoy Red Coat at times.[3][4] She has also been a Red Coat and was revealed as the Black Widow.[5][6] In the final season, it is revealed that Jenna Marshall, Noel Kahn and Wren Kingston were also members. Sydney Driscoll was a helper to "A.D."[7] and recruits Aria Montgomery.

Additionally, several characters have acted as an accomplice to "A", though were not a member of the A-Team, including Lucas Gottesman, Melissa Hastings, Darren Wilden and Mary Drake.

Other "A's"

Caleb Rivers took the role of "A" to trick Hanna into meeting him. Shana Fring pretended to be "A" to attack the Liars in New York. She donned a black hoodie and attacked them at the coffee shop, only to end up shooting Ezra instead, who had found out her identity. In the following episode, she continued to hunt down the Liars, and sent a group of black hoodies to trick them. The black hoodies used the alias "A" during their taunting of the Liars. Shana revealed herself to the girls and revealed that she wanted justice for Jenna. The Liars falsely believed that Shana was Big A.

Disguises

Although typically wearing a signature black hoodie and gloves, “A” has worn a variety of disguises in the television series to spy on the Liars at various parties and events.

Red Coat

Red Coat is a disguise used by two members of the A-Team. Consisting of a knee length red trench coat, black skinny jeans and black heeled ankle boots, CeCe Drake took on the disguise to lead the A-Team and go out in public. Drake also hired Sara Harvey to act as a decoy whenever she couldn't sport the disguise in her assignments. Alison DiLaurentis occasionally used the disguise to protect her friends without revealing she was alive.

The Black Widow

The Black Widow is a previously anonymous character who attended detective Darren Wilden's funeral in "'A' Is for A-l-i-v-e". The disguise is all black clothing, with her face concealed by a black veil. The Black Widow is later shown to be a part of the A-Team, when she is seen inside the "A" R.V. placing a Mona doll with the rest of the "A" doll collection. She then lifts up her veil to reveal a burned Ali mask underneath, revealing that she was the Red Coat at the Lodge. In the fifth season, the disguise is seen inside one of "A's" lairs.[9] In "Game Over, Charles", it is revealed that Sara Harvey was the Black Widow. Charlotte sent her to Wilden's funeral to make sure he was deceased.[3] In "Of Late I Think of Rosewood", Sara shows up to Charlotte's funeral in a variation of the disguise, though this time revealing her face.

In a nightmare that Alison had during "How the 'A' Stole Christmas", her mom, Jessica DiLaurentis shows up as the Black Widow.

The Queen of Hearts

The Queen of Hearts is a previously anonymous character that made an appearance during the third season's Halloween special, "This Is a Dark Ride". In the fourth season's premiere, it is revealed that there were actually two of them in the Halloween train, Melissa Hastings and Darren Wilden. Wilden attacked Spencer and fought Paige, while Melissa drugged Aria and took her body. Wilden also murdered Garrett Reynolds fearing he'd expose his corrupt activities and Melissa later admits to Spencer that she was blackmailed into doing his bidding. However, in Mona's footage, evidence shows that Wilden tried to abandon the train and Melissa is heard ordering him to stay. Wilden would later place a fainted Aria in a box beside Garrett's corpse and then gathered with Melissa in an attempt to push them off the train. They fled the scene once Aria regained her consciousness and stabbed Wilden.

The Black Swan

The Black Swan is a previously anonymous character that made an appearance during the Masquerade Ball. Melissa was revealed to be the person behind the disguise in "Birds of a Feather". She claimed that "A" (Mona) threatened her, stating that her false pregnancy would've been exposed if she did not distract Jenna during the event. The disguise is inspired by Odile from Swan Lake.

Alison disappearance affected her best friends Hannah, Emily, Spencer and Aria. Alison loved Emily but told Emily that I don't like you like that I kissed you for the real thing. They miss her so much, even if she knows all their secrets and she has secrets as well. Alison is not dead, she just hiding away from someone called A, but are friends think she is dead, because they think that is Alison in the funeral. Alison half brother Jason realized when he lost her that he really care about her and love her so much. Alison friends found out that she is really a life. They beg her to come back that Alison friends can protect her. The group of friends found out who A really is CeCe Drake but also Charles are half brother also half sister of Alison and Jason. Alison dated Ian Thomas (secret date; deceased), Ezra Fitz (dated), Cyrus Petrillo (ex-boyfriend),Gabriel Holbrook (kissed),and Lorenzo Calderon (ex-boyfriend). Alison maried him because she loved him, not knowing he was pretending to love her, for revenge of CeCe Drake, so he took her to the hospital and poisoning her, drugging her, tied her to a bed Archer Dunhill (ex-husband; deceased), CeCe Drake was his lover and Doctor. Lorenzo Calderon is attracted to Alison DiLaurentis, and he disregards all the negative things that the rest of Rosewood says about her. He is also empathetic and understanding. This is evident when Lorenzo doesn't get offended when Mr. DiLaurentis is rude towards him. Instead, he tries to make Alison appreciate her Father's point of view.

Lorenzo suggests calling a friend on Tanner's team to get some answers. Alison offers him some homemade soup, saying she couldn't think of a better way to thank him. He tells her he does and they kiss.

Later, Lorenzo informs Alison that Tanner has recorded the meetings with Kenneth, but he doesn't know what they talked about, since the tapes are off-limits to him. After Lorenzo takes his medicine, he sleeps on the couch. Some time later, Alison steals his access card to the police department and walks out.

After Alison gets caught by Tanner, she returns to Lorenzo, who already knows what happened. He is furious, as she risked his job by breaking into the police department. She falls for and secretly dates Maya St. Germain. When "A" outs Emily to the whole school, her parents force her to go to Tree Tops, a "de-gaying" rehabilitation center. Failing that, Emily is shipped off to Iowa to live with relatives; deeply unhappy there, she runs away. Her parents ask her to come home, stating that they will learn to accept Emily for who she is.[4] Emily comes to discover that she's bisexual, when she falls for and eventually sleeps with a boy named Isaac Colbert. Although they break up soon after, Emily learns she's pregnant and secretly gives the baby up for adoption during summer break. As a senior in high school, she accidentally meets Kelsey, a girl whom Spencer framed for drug possession the past summer; Emily ends up falling for her, but the relationship ends when Kelsey attempts suicide.

In the beginning of both the books and the television series, Alison is a central character who is shown mostly in flashbacks.[1] The narrative is set when Alison mysteriously disappears and leaves the suburb of Rosewood shocked. Due to her position as a queen bee of Rosewood's social scene, Alison's actions and relations were constantly under scrutiny from the town's citizens. Sasha Pieterse, who portrays Alison on screen, has described the character as an indecisive person, showing herself as a ruthless, manipulative girl.[2] Due to the massive reformulation on the story's timing, pacing and overall narrative for the television adaptation, the on-screen Alison DiLaurentis holds various differences from her literary counterpart, such as the fact that the latter has an identical twin sister, while the former does not.

The twin sisters Alison and Courtney Day-DiLaurentis were born on June 6, 1990,[citation needed] the fruits of a secret sexual relationship between Jessica DiLaurentis and Peter Hastings. They were identical, but completely opposite in personality. Both were popular in her hometown, but Alison was known for her wickedness, unlike Courtney, who was admired for having a kind behavior. Disgusted by that fact, Alison began to make their parents—Jessica and Kenneth, the adoptive father—think that Courtney was psychologically damaged. Alison forced Courtney to impersonate her, which led to a physical fight between the two. When their parents tried to find a solution to the situation, Alison threw all the blame on Courtney, saying she was making up fake stories. Eventually Courtney was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. The family then moved to Rosewood to avoid attention and shortened their surname from Day-DiLaurentis to just DiLaurentis.

However, Alison did not enjoy the full high school experience. During a visitation to the family, Courtney tricked her parents by dressing up like Alison and Alison was taken to the hospital instead. That way, Courtney took the popular life of Alison, whereas Alison was hospitalized; from then on, a sense of hatred grew within Alison. Two years after Courtney took the reins, Alison returned to the DiLaurentis house for a visit. During a night when Courtney (posing as Alison) and her new friends—Spencer Hastings, Hanna Marin, Aria Montgomery and Emily Fields—were asleep, Alison reached them and she and Courtney got into a fight in the woods surrounding the DiLaurentis residence. The fight resulted in Courtney's death. Alison and her helper and boyfriend, Nick Maxwell, buried Courtney's body later on.

When Alison was about to get her life back, Courtney's friends warned Mrs. DiLaurentis that "Alison" was missing. Jessica then assumed that Courtney (Alison, actually) did something against her sister's life and sent her back to psychological hospital. Meanwhile, masons filled the hole where Courtney's body was buried to build a gazebo. Shortly after, "Alison" was reported missing.[4] Three years later, Courtney's friends began to be pursued by someone named "A" who knew their greatest secrets and threatened them constantly. Months later, Mona Vanderwaal, a classmate of the girls and Alison, was revealed to be "A".[5] Soon, Alison took the stalking method and began to chase the girls, seeking revenge for them being outside that day that Courtney used them to trick her mother into believing that she were her sister.

Alison made small appearances during the period hiding behind the "A" mask. The DiLaurentis revealed the secret about the twins after a man named Billy Ford was arrested for murdering Alison, saying that they kept the sisters hidden for so long to avoid turmoil in town. Alison, posing as Courtney, someone unknown to the four girls, invited them to spend a weekend at the family home in the Poconos. There, they got together and the girls started thinking about introducing "Courtney" to the group. However, they were trapped inside a room and Alison soon revealed the whole truth about the death of the real Courtney, and about her desire for revenge. Alison then set the building on fire, but the girls managed to escape. When trying to escape the fire, Alison herself got several burns on her body and managed to escape with the help of Nick.

Alison then used the following weeks to recover from the fire whilst observing her victims.Nick stayed with her during her healing process, but Alison eventually discarded and incriminated him for everything she had committed, such as the homicides of Ian Thomas and Jenna Cavanaugh. In order to finally get her revenge, Alison wrote an entire diary with untrue stories of the girls torturing her while they were keeping her hostage. The piece was then found by the Rosewood P.D. and the girls were incriminated by the alleged death of Alison DiLaurentis. However, Emily faked her own death, and, while Alison and everyone else thought she was dead, she managed to reach Alison's lair—which was receiving help from Mrs. DiLaurentis—with police officers. The girls were eventually released from all charges, and Alison was arrested for good.

Season 1

Alison DiLaurentis is introduced as a very popular girl from the suburb of Rosewood, Pennsylvania, and the leader of a clique composed by her, Spencer Hastings, Aria Montgomery, Emily Fields and Hanna Marin. The first minutes of the pilot episode show the five friends reunited in the barn-turned-loft of the Hastings family during a night of summer vacation. In the midst of night, Hanna, Emily and Aria wake up to see Spencer arriving back to the barn after leaving to somewhere. Spencer naively announces that she has heard a scream of Alison, seemingly shaken due to something. Shortly after, Alison is pronounced as a missing person, it's been a while since Alison went missing, and a year later her body is found buried in the backyard of the DiLaurentis' house. During the year that Alison is missing the friends grew apart, but after the introduction of "A" and the return of Aria Montgomery from a year in Iceland with her family, the friends reunite. "A" makes an appearance by sending threatening text messages to the girls and leading them into trouble. During the entire first season, Alison appears in flashbacks. In these flashbacks, Alison is shown as a ruthless, despicable, two-sided teenager who uses the others' secret against themselves.

Season 2

After Ian Thomas is pushed down by "A" from the top of a bell tower and his body goes missing, the girls are forced to keep their friendship a secret and to maintain therapy sessions with Dr. Anne Sullivan to discuss about Alison's absence in their lives, a fact that their parents believe to be the reason why the girls are behaving strangely.Days after, through Spencer's sister Melissa Hastings, the girls find Thomas' dead body, accompanied by a suicide letter in which he admits that he killed Alison. Following, the girls continue to be threatened by "A". Garrett Reynolds is arrested for Alison's murder after Jenna Marshall hands the Rosewood Police Department a missing page of Alison's autopsy. The second season ends when Mona Vanderwaal—a Rosewood High student and one of Alison's victims of bullying when she was alive—is revealed as "A"and is sent to Radley-a mental institute.

Season 3

The third season is set five months after the previous one. One night, Spencer, Hanna, Emily and Aria get together in Spencer's living room to drink and enjoy a life without a stalker. Emily, however, is still mourning over the death of her ex-girlfriend Maya St. Germain, who died in the same night of Mona's reveal. After drinking more than expected, the girls wake up in the midst of night to discover that Emily has disappeared. They later find her in the cemetery, standing over Alison's grave, with Alison's body missing. With Emily drugged and them being involved in a crime, the girls then promise to keep the secret. They dispose of all evidence connecting them to the happening, including all of Emily's clothes. A new person using the "A" identity soon restarts the stalking game. The new stalker threatens them with what happened previously. Mostly of the season's episodes revolve around the question of where Alison's remains are.The girls later on befriend new resident CeCe Drake, a woman physically and psychologically similar to Alison. Drake reveals to them that she and Alison were best friends when Alison was alive, years prior. Throughout the following episodes Drake gets intimate with the girls, who are suspicious of her Alison-like behavior. Later on, Alison is shown in more flashbacks of the night she disappeared, with some revealing that Alison met with CeCe, Aria's father, Jenna Marshall and Garrett Reynolds that night. In sequence, the girls discover, in Alison's biology notebook, a conversation between her and a friend in which Alison talks about a "beach hottie. “The girls investigate while a figure using a red coat starts to appear periodically to them, and they begin to believe that it is Alison. In the meantime, Mona and Spencer's boyfriend Toby Cavanaugh are revealed as helpers (and double agents) of the new "A". With the help of the two, the girls plot a trap to catch "A," but the stalker uses their own setting against them, and, during a fire, the girls are saved by Red Coat. Hanna wakes up and sees Red Coat staring at her, and the person is revealed to be Alison. Afterwards, Mona and Spencer claim that they also saw Alison. On the way back to Rosewood, Mona reveals that Red Coat would sometimes wear a mask that looked like Alison's face, meaning that Red Coat could have just looked like Alison.

Season 4

After the girls find Alison's diary, they try to understand her. Throughout the season, Alison is shown in several flashbacks concerning her behavior, mostly based on histories written on her diary.[25][26][27][28][29][30] The girls later meet Carla Grunwald, who tells them that she helped Alison step out of the grave that she was buried; Grunwald then drove her to a hospital, but Alison ran away. With this confirmation, the girls start a quest to find Alison, following the steps of two persons using the Red Coat costume, one of them being revealed to be CeCe. Fortunately, after a Halloween party, the girls follow a Red Coat, from Ravenswood to Rosewood, who is revealed to be Alison. She tells the girls that she needs their help, but she vanishes shortly after.[32] Alison later appears to Emily and starts requesting things to her. The season ends when Alison sits down with her friends to explain everything that had happened to her two years earlier.

Season 5

In the explosive season 4 finale, her friends finally find out what happened the night Alison went missing. When the story time has finished the girls are scared by an anonymous person named "A" who tries to shoot and kill the girls but mostly pointing towards Alison, this is later revealed to be Shana. When Shana Fring is killed by Aria Montgomery after being revealed as "A" and turning on Ali and the girls, Alison returns home to Rosewood after and reports to the cops. Alison makes up a story about her disappearance saying that she was kidnapped. While the girls were in New York, back in Rosewood Jessica DiLaurentis (Alison's mother) was killed and buried in the Hastings backyard. By the mid season Alison and her best friends group partially disband due to the fact that the other girls believe Alison has gone rogue after she tells the police that Cyrus Petrillo is her kidnapper, even though she was never actually kidnapped. This leads to them believe she might be the new "A" and is responsible for her mother's death, by the mid season finale, Alison is accused of killing Mona Vanderwaal, and is departed from her group until Alison's arrest for Mona's murder. While Ali is in jail, the girls head to Mona's house to see if Mona left them any clues before she died, after locating a barrel in which the girls believe is Mona's body, Hanna is arrested as an accessory for helping Ali kill Mona, as the trial begins Alison is found guilty for the murders and the rest of the girls are arrested as well as accessories to this. While being transported, Hanna, Emily, Aria, and Spencer are stopped by "A" and kidnapped and taken to "A"'s dollhouse, where they find an alive Mona.

Season 6

In the beginning of season 6, we see Alison out of jail for a mistakened killing of Mona, and the girls with Mona are still in the dollhouse being tortured and tormented. Alison comes up with a plan with Ezra Fitz, Toby Cavanaugh, and Caleb Rivers to find the girls and make sure they come home soon. The girls are rescued along with a shaken-up Sara Harvey, who presumably went missing the same time Alison did from Courtland, and they come home after being diagnosed for having PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder) from their time spent kidnapped. The mid season jumps 5 years into the future. Alison is a teacher at Rosewood High School and is engaged to one Archer Dunhill, then known as Elliot Rollins, who was Charlotte DiLaurentis' doctor during her five years at Welby. Alison is admitted to a psychiatric hospital due to being tricked by Mary Drake and Archer in Jessica DiLaurentis and Darren Wilden costumes, thinking that she was seeing their ghosts.

Season 7

At the beginning of the season, Archer has Alison drugged and falsely imprisoned at Welby. In a brief lucid moment, she seemingly confesses to killing Charlotte to Emily.[36] After growing suspicious of Archer, Emily, Aria and Spencer try to rescue Alison from Welby to no avail. She shares her location with the Liars using Archer's phone and escapes his car with the Liars hot on his trail. He is run over by Hanna. The latter half of the season involved the group covering up his death. Alison later reveals to Emily that she is pregnant, believing it to be hers and Archer's.She discovered that she was in fact impregnated at Whelby by A.D. with Emily's eggs and a then unknown man (Wren Kingston’s sperm, during her turn at the "Liars' Lament" board game.Alison soon resumed teaching at Rosewood High and continued to have friction with Paige McCullers, Emily's girlfriend.Alison's reciprocated feelings for Emily resurface as they spend more time together. Paige realises this and gives her blessing to the couple before leaving Rosewood for good.Upon Mary Drake confessing to killing Archer, Alison along with the other Liars are no longer implicated in his murder. She and Emily co-parent their twin daughters Lily and Grace in Alison's childhood home in Rosewood. A year after A.D.'s game ended, Alison proposed to Emily.Alongside their friends, they unmask A.D. once and for all.

Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists

Alison now attends Beacon Heights University, where she is reunited with Mona and became a teaching assistant. Alison is then introduced to Claire Hotchkiss, whose family is the founder of BHU, and her son Nolan. After Nolan is murdered, Alison goes on to help his remaining friends Ava, Caitlin, and Dylan who are the primary suspects of the murder. After receiving a divorce paper from her wife, Alison decides to investigate the death of Taylor Hotchkiss who allegedly committed suicide a year ago. After finding and convincing Taylor to return, Alison and the group continue to deal with Dana Booker, the head security of BHU who is investigating Nolan's death. After Dana exposed their secrets, Alison and Dylan are expelled from BHU, Mona is fired, while Caitlin and Ava had to leave. However, after Caitlin's boyfriend Jeremy is accused of the murder and is shot by Taylor, Claire apologized to the group and allowed them to stay. The group is then introduced to The Professor, who reveals that the group is a part of their experiment.

In Burned, while on a school-hosted cruise for spring break, Emily begins a new relationship with Jordan, a criminal who is on the run and being pursued by the FBI. Jordan is arrested and sent to prison on a tip from "A"/Alison. She is later murdered by someone paid by Alison, who had Jordan killed out of revenge for "stealing" Emily from her. Severely depressed and increasingly desperate, Emily contemplates committing suicide and very nearly attempts it; she is only talked out of it when the Liars remind her that it's what Alison wants: for them to die.

In the last book, Emily and the other Liars are later put on trial after Alison fakes her own death and frames them for it (setting it up to look like the Liars took revenge on Alison for everything she did to them). Emily, unbeknownst to the other Liars, fakes her own suicide to trick Alison. Emily tracks down Alison and Alison's mother, who are in hiding, and after a confrontation with them, is able to expose them as criminals. After Alison's trial, she moves out to California and begins a new relationship with a girl named Laura, finally feeling at peace.

Having fallen in love with Alison in the seventh grade, she frequently fantasizes about Alison still being alive and loving Emily back. Emily admits to being somewhat obsessed with Alison, priding herself on knowing everything about her. For a brief period, when Alison comes back as "Courtney", the two have a romantic relationship; Emily is heartbroken when Alison reveals it was all a lie.[8] Unbeknownst to the other girls, Emily attempted to save Alison from the DiLaurentis' burning Poconos house. She feels tremendous guilt over her actions, especially after Alison returns as "A".[6] However, eventually, Emily begins to hate Alison; Jordan's death at Alison's hands sends Emily into a spiral of rage and deep depression. Following Jordan's death, Emily swears revenge on Alison and remarks that she would not mind killing Alison.

Emily's closest friends are the other Liars, and during the periods when they are not associating with one another, Emily is very lonely. She is quite popular at school but feels as though she's not close with anyone. She is constantly searching for a "best friend" to take Alison's place. Though she is well-liked by the other Liars, they are often annoyed by how sensitive she is and her devotion to Alison, especially Spencer. Emily's insistence that Alison is alive often causes problems for them as a group. Her relationship with her family is strained, predominantly due to her bisexuality and "A"-related events. She ends up severing ties with her family at the end of the series.

Season 1

Emily was a former student at Rosewood High School in Rosewood, Pennsylvania, a star and a non-competitive swimmer. A year before the start of the series, Emily had been best friends with Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse), a cruel popular girl who went missing one day. At the beginning of the school year, Emily befriends a girl named Maya St. Germain (Bianca Lawson), her new next-door neighbor whose family has moved into the old DiLaurentis house. Emily and Maya instantly bond, and the next day they kiss when Emily walks her home. The appearance of "A" reveals that Emily is questioning her sexuality and may have been in love with Alison. After Maya stays over at Emily's house for a night, Ben (Steven Krueger), Emily's boyfriend, senses that Emily is losing interest in him; he attempts to rape her in the school locker room but is stopped by Toby (Keegan Allen). Grateful and not wanting to deal with her hom*osexuality, Emily grows closer to Toby, despite the warnings of her friends, who believe him to be "A"/Alison's killer.

Emily goes with Toby to Homecoming, much to the dismay of her friends; Emily later admits to Toby that she wants to come with Maya. Convinced by her friends that Toby is dangerous, the two get into a physical confrontation; as Emily tries to run away, she trips and hits her head, falling unconscious. Toby drops her off at the hospital in Rosewood, which convinces Emily that he is innocent. When a tornado warning traps everyone inside the high school, Emily finds herself haunted by memories of Alison. That day, she is outed by Detective Darren Wilden (Bryce Johnson), who accuses her of destroying Alison's memorial in the park (when, in reality, Emily had been trying to salvage what she could from the wreckage). Emily tearfully confesses to her friends that she was in love with Alison; although surprised, they are instantly accepting of her being a lesbian.[14] "A" later mails Emily's mother (Nia Peeples) a copy of the same picture of Emily and Maya kissing.[15] Although devastated, she doesn't confront Emily about it, instead later showing it to Emily's father (Eric Steinberg) when he returns home from his tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Toby comes to visit Emily to prove that he is innocent, but when cats is arrested, he believes that she is

responsible for it. Believing that Emily and Toby were involved romantically, Emily's father confronts her about it; after denying that anything is going on, she ends up coming out to her shocked father.[16] Emily's relationship with her parents soon becomes very strained due to the truth about her sexuality, although her parents attempt to accept her by inviting Maya over to dinner. Although Emily's father soon warms to Maya, Emily's mother tells her that she is disgusted by Emily being gay. Believing Maya has corrupted Emily, she can have Maya sent away to "True North", a camp for juvenile delinquents, which causes Emily and her mother's relationship to suffer even more.

When Emily re-joins the school's swim team after a brief injury, she finds herself in a rivalry with Paige McCullers (Lindsey Shaw), an excellent swimmer who had taken Emily's place in her absence. A title from an episode, If at First You Don't Succeed, Lie, Lie Again[18] Highly competitive, Paige lashes out at Emily with hom*ophobic insults, later even physically threatening her. Soon after, however, Paige apologizes to Emily, explaining that she was jealous of how "easy" Emily's life seemed. After Paige's hom*ophobic and demanding father accuses Emily of getting preferential treatment, Emily's mother stands up to him, which helps to repair the relationship between Emily and her mother. Paige apologizes for her father later that evening and comes out to Emily by kissing her. Having grown close despite their rocky start, Emily and Paige begin to secretly date. They break up when Emily expresses dissatisfaction with having to hide their relationship and Paige gets jealous seeing a girl from another school, Samara Cook (Claire Holt), flirting with Emily. Emily's father is sent to Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas, to help with military training, and Emily's mother reveals to Emily that they are moving down to Texas to join him. Emily is dismayed, feeling as though she has only just begun to fit in at Rosewood.

Emily recalls a memory from the day Alison went missing: Alison visited her and gave her a snow globe, which, unbeknownst to Emily at the time, contained a key to a storage locker. Realizing Alison had hidden something away, the girls use the key to discover a series of videos that Ian Thomas had filmed. Believing that Ian is A/Alison's killer, the girls make plans to confront him. Their plans go astray when A kills Ian and takes his body from the crime scene, leaving the police suspicious of Emily and her friends.

Season 2

Hoping to convince her mother to stay in Rosewood, Emily considers faking a letter from a college swim scout; deciding it would be wrong, she rips up the letter. However, A makes an unaltered, undamaged copy and sends it to Emily's mother. Emily can stay in Rosewood, but feels guilty, confiding in Samara, her new girlfriend. When Emily's mother moves to Texas, Emily goes to live with Hanna.

Ian (Ryan Merriman) is found dead of an apparent suicide, but Emily realizes that Ian's suicide note is a mash-up of lines from A's messages. Emily then stumbles upon Logan Reed (Tilky Jones), the messenger who had been sent to pick up money for Ian, after the girls blackmailed him in an attempt to reveal him as Alison's killer. When Emily relays this information to Officer Garrett Reynolds (Yani Gellman), who has been assigned to "watch" the girls, he later pays off Reed to keep him quiet, preventing Emily from doing any further investigating.Emily's relationship with Samara begins to suffer when Samara tells her she isn't interested in dating exclusively; they later break up after "A" forces Emily to give Samara's friend her phone number as a sign of flirtation.

A concludes that Emily is the "weak link" in the group and begins to torment her as much as possible. That, combined with the added stress and guilt from the fake college letter, lands Emily in the hospital with a stomach ulcer. While there, it is revealed that "A" secretly dosed Emily with HGH, forever ruining Emily's chances of getting a swimming scholarship.[24] Emily then reunites with Maya, who is now living a few towns over; they both decide to take things slow and see if they are interested in rekindling their relationship.

Dr Sullivan (Annabeth Gish), the girls' therapist, goes missing, and the girls are forced to go on a mission to save her. "A" sends Emily to a barn in the woods; she ends up getting locked inside and passes out due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Emily is then visited by Alison, who explains that she knows the identity of A, but can't reveal it to Emily, shortly before kissing her. Emily is rescued by her friends but remains uncertain if Alison is alive or if it was just a dream. The girls are then arrested soon after, having been caught with a piece of evidence the police suspect to be the murder weapon used on Alison.

Emily and the other girls plot to try and trick "A" by pretending Emily is being frozen out of the group. The plan is only moderately successful; however, the girls can get access to A's phone. Meanwhile, Emily is forced to deal with her new relationship with Maya, who is desperate to avoid getting sent back to True North. Emily later finds out that she can't go back because her soon-to-be killer was there and wants Emily to go with her to San Francisco to save her. When Emily rejects leaving, Maya disappears. Emily believes Maya has run off to San Francisco to stay with some friends, and is distraught. She attempts to find Maya, to no avail. Things are soon complicated by Paige; having recently come out, she hopes to rekindle her and Emily's relationship. Emily's father returns to Rosewood briefly to attend a father-daughter dance. He later tells Emily that he has been assigned on another tour in Afghanistan. After his departure, Emily's mother makes plans to return home to Rosewood.

With the girls charged with the challenge of unmasking "A" at the school's masquerade ball, Emily is on edge. At the ball, she meets Paige; the two talk and come to the mutual agreement that for now, they will be just friends. After Mona (Janel Parrish) is revealed to be "A" and subsequently arrested, Emily and the other girls come home to find the police at Emily's house. Emily's mother explains that Maya has been murdered and her body found at the DiLaurentis house. Upon hearing this, Emily breaks down, comforted by the other girls.

Season 3

Now a senior, Emily has spent the last five months away from her friends, helping build houses in Haiti as well as partying and drinking heavily to the point of blackouts. She is still depressed over Maya's death, but is at the same time angry at being treated like she is "made out of glass". When the Liars reunite after their time apart, Emily goes missing during the night and is later found by the other girls standing over Alison's dug-up grave, unable to remember the events leading up to that point. Realizing it is a set-up, the Liars create an alibi for themselves and cover their tracks. Emily's guilt over what happened distances her even more from the Liars, and she finds comfort in Nate St. Germain (Sterling Sulieman), Maya's cousin, who has recently moved to Rosewood to attend Hollis.

In "That Girl is Poison" Emily discovers that her flask had been drugged with a sleeping pill, causing her to black out. In "Stolen Kisses", she learns that on the night she was drunk, she had visited Paige, kissing her before leaving. Paige feels guilty about what happened, believing she took advantage of her, and Emily is shocked and confused about this new revelation. That evening she returns to Paige's house and explains that she realized there was a reason she ended up at Paige's house when she was drunk: she wanted to be with Paige. The two kiss, rekindling their relationship.

Emily becomes depressed after watching old videos of Maya on Maya's website but is cheered up by Paige. In "What Lies Beneath", Emily and Hanna discover that Maya had been hiding in Noel Kahn's (Brant Daugherty) family's cabin, and had never actually left Rosewood. Upset by this, Emily and Nate comfort one another, only to end up kissing. She confesses to Paige about kissing Nate, who explains that Emily is simply confused over her connection to Maya through Nate. Emily then rebuffs Nate's further romantic advances, stating that she just wants to be friends.

When the Liars suspect Paige of being "A" in the mid-season finale, "The Lady Killer", Emily steps in to defend her, putting up a wall between herself and the other girls. Stressed over the Liars' constant insistence of Paige's guilt and Garrett's upcoming trial, Emily joins Nate for the weekend at a secluded cabin in the woods. However, after being warned to "get out" by "A", Emily discovers that Nate was in fact at True North with Maya; Nate admits that his real name is Lyndon James. Angry at Emily for "taking" Maya from him, Lyndon reveals he has kidnapped Paige and plans to murder her in front of Emily. Emily escapes but is caught by Lyndon in a nearby lighthouse while attempting to call 911. During the ensuing struggle, Emily stabs Nate, fatally wounding him. She then reconciles with the other Liars when they realize Paige is innocent.

Season 4

Emily starts to struggle to know if Alison is alive or not. She takes some pills from her mother's medicine cabinet gets drowsy and groggy, and causes an injury during a swim meet which puts her out of action. The situation gets worse when someone calls Social Services to her parents in an attempt to get her away from them, which does not happen. In addition, Emily's mother is suspended from work because Emily stole a key from Pam's desk to invade Officer Wilden's office to find evidence about Alison, and the P.D. ends up blaming Pam for that. Shortly after, "A", drives a car through Emily's house, leaving her and her mother no other option but to rent a motel. Later, Jessica DiLaurentis (Andrea Parker) offers Emily Alison's old room to stay in temporarily. Emily stays in the DiLaurentis house for a while until she moves to Spencer's, due to the house's creepiness. Throughout the season, Emily, Hanna, and Spencer start to investigate Ezra to discover if he is or is not "A." In the season finale, Alison appears, and they finally get some answers about the night Ali disappeared.

Season 5

With Alison back in Rosewood, Emily gets supportive and protective of her. She befriends newcomer Sydney (Chloe Bridges) and becomes her swimming coach. However, Emily discovers Sydney is a friend of Jenna and breaks all ties with her. Alison apologizes for the way she treated Emily in the past, and they kiss; however, any possibility of romance is squashed when Emily starts to think that Alison is "A." Emily and Paige rekindle their romance, which is rapidly ended when Paige is forced to move to California. Lonely and heartbroken over Paige's departure, Emily starts a relationship with her new co-worker Talia (Miranda Rae Mayo). However, when Emily discovers that Talia is married and their relationship is calming down, she breaks up with her. Emily volunteers in a beauty pageant when Hanna, who wants money for college, loses. Later, the girls discover Alison's innocence and try to clear Alison's name and free Hanna. In the season finale, Emily and the others are arrested as accomplices to Mona's murder; however, on the way to prison, their van is hijacked by "A."

Season 6

In the aftermath of the Liars' abduction orchestrated by "A," Emily befriends a former missing girl, Sara Harvey (Dre Davis), who was also Charles/"A's" prisoner.[28] She is trying to help Sara adapt again into society, with the cost of denying her stuff. Nicole (Rebecca Breeds), the supervisor of Habitat for Humanity,. offers Emily the option of moving to another country to help new people, and Emily gets forced to decide on her future. She chooses to stay in Rosewood and move on with Sara, only to be betrayed when Sara is revealed to be "A's" right-hand woman.[29][30][31][32] Later, Emily goes to Pepperdine University but drops out later when her father dies. She starts to work as a bartender in Los Angeles but returns to Rosewood at Alison's request, and also to depose on Charlotte's release from psychological hospital. A new "A", now entitled "A.D.", surfaces, and steals Emily's eggs, which she donated to gain money for college. She starts to investigate Sara, who is free from jail, believing she's the new stalker. Also in this season, Emily befriends Sabrina (Lulu Brud), the new-in-charge at the Brew, which in the following season leads to a brief hook-up.

Season 7

In "Tick-Tock, Bitches", Emily goes to Welby State Psychiatric Hospital to see Alison, who is blaming herself for something. Worried, Emily drives to Alison's house and finds the sweater that a blonde girl was using the night Charlotte died. Meanwhile, Hanna is held captive by "A.D.", who asked the Liars, Caleb, and Ezra to find out who is Charlotte's killer. Emily gives the sweater to the group and Caleb flees, giving it to "A.D." in hopes of saving Hanna. After, in "Bedlam", Hanna returns home after being rescued by Mary Drake. Emily explains to Hanna who Drake is, confirming that she was a patient at Radley Sanitarium, and is Jessica DiLaurentis' twin sister. Hanna then concludes that Mary is “Uber A.” They take her to Lucas's apartment, where Hanna retains a strange and rude behavior. Emily calls Spencer to talk outside the apartment, saying that Hanna has the look of fear she had while she was stuck in the Dollhouse. They also argue about Alison's safety at Welby State, with Spencer saying she's safe locked up, and Emily denying it. Back at the Welby State, Emily tries to visit Alison, but a nurse confirms that only family members can see her, and following, Elliott (Huw Collins) repeats that Alison's condition isn't the best and rapidly avoids his conversation with Emily, leaving her unresigned. Following, Emily tells Spencer that Alison sounded frightened, and Emily urges the possibility of using Mary to visit Alison, since Mary's family. However, Spencer declines the idea. Aria, Emily, and Spencer go talk with Elliott to gain the opportunity to visit Alison, and he continues to deny it. While Elliott is talking with someone on the phone, the girls receive a new message from “A.D.” and they realize that the stalker maybe is not so far as they think. At the Radley Hotel, Mary shows up and starts remembering the old Radley Sanitarium. Emily helps her and they deal to visit Alison together. At the psychiatric hospital, Alison wakes up and sees Emily. Alison claims Emily's help, stating that Elliott is a bad person, and Alison sees Mary and starts thinking that she is her mother, Jessica. However, Elliott enters the room, and he kicks out everybody, including the nurse (Gwen Holloway). In the hallway, Elliott asks to talk with Mary; and, inside an office, Mary complains that she has been calling Elliott for two days, without an answer and tells Elliott that he has gone too far. Elliott says that Mary should not appear in the hospital and tells her to leave him to his work. Emily, meanwhile, is watching their shadows through an unfocused window. Later, during "The Talented Mr. Rollins", the Liars come up with a plan to help Alison, and, while in the woods, Hanna accidentally hits Elliott with her car, killing him instantly. Afterward, Emily, Spencer, and Aria bury Elliott's body and cover their tracks towards his death. Emily and Aria go to visit Alison the next day at Welby State and discover that the police know about Elliott stealing the Carissimi Group money and is after him.

Throughout "Along Comes Mary" and "Wanted: Dead or Alive", Emily and Sabrina spend the night together and Emily gets late for a test. However, days later, while preparing a type of drink, Emily receives a message, which alleges that she scored 92% in the exam. Sequentially, a message from "A.D." is received, revealing that he took the exam for Emily. Emily contacts the mysterious person who was helping Elliott through his burner phone, and she and Aria drive to Elliott's secret apartment. Aria and Emily find a mess that had been used to cover up Elliott's traces. The two discover that Archer's surname is Dunhill, and connect directly to the acronym "A.D." They also found a fake head, several pictures of Darren Wilden's physical characteristics, passports, and a notebook with different types of payments. Emily and Aria get scared when someone tries to enter the apartment; however, they open the door when discover that is Toby. He says the police found out about the apartment in a document found in Elliott's car. Toby commands the girls to leave and gets angry when he discovers that they have left fingerprints in some objects. Emily and Sabrina mark a new encounter on Saturday. At the Radley, Emily arrives at Jenna's room to deliver two drinks. Emily peeks into Jenna's laptop but is stopped by Sara, who screams at her. Emily reveals to the two that someone is stalking her and her friends, after which Jenna (Tammin Sursok) tells Emily a story of when Charlotte was still checked in the psychiatric hospital. In the flashback, Charlotte enlists Jenna's help to find her birth mother and make Archer Dunhill the alias of Elliott Rollins to purposefully meet Alison and take advantage of her good intentions for her eventual release. Jenna then reveals she's angry because of Charlotte's death. Emily leaves the room, but before she does, Sara warns Emily, trying to say that someone is dangerous. However, she is interrupted before saying who is in danger, when Jenna calls her. Emily tells Alison about what Jenna revealed to her, and Alison gets angry. After, in the DiLaurentis' house, Alison receives Hanna's call warning her about the danger; after, Alison invites the cop who is securing her house to enter. However, when she goes to her room, the officer—who is actually "A.D" with a mask—attacks her. During the struggle, Alison rips off part of the mask, claiming that she saw Elliott, but A.D. retreats when the police's siren is heard. Emily comforts Alison after the confusion fades. By the end of "Wanted: Dead or Alive", a maid discovers Sara's dead body in her apartment.

In "Original G'A'ngsters", Emily and her mother, Pam (Nia Peeples), are running and exercising through the city forest and Emily decides to take her to celebrate her birthday in the Radley. They celebrate later as her mother enters a group of brides-to-be women. During "Exes and OMGs", she receives a job offer from Principal Hackett (John O'Brien) to work as a swim coach at the school and finds out that Paige (Lindsey Shaw) has returned to Rosewood and is also a candidate for the job. Paige reveals to Emily that she almost joined the Olympics, but a car accident ended up destroying that possibility. Plus, in "The Wrath of Kahn", Emily reveals to Paige about the new "A.D.", and her relationship with Sabrina plummets. Meanwhile, in "The Darkest Knight", Alison reveals to Emily that she's pregnant with Archer's baby, and they kiss. Paige accuses Emily of being Alison's "puppet," though she doesn't know about the hookup or the pregnancy. Later, the Liars go to a school for the blind to find out more about Mary Drake and "A.D.", and Jenna, armed with a gun, attempts to murder the Liars with Noel. However, Noel, while attacking Hanna and Emily, trips on his axe and accidentally kills himself via decapitation. Jenna then shoots at the Liars, as they run, but gets separated from Spencer, who is shot. Before Jenna can cause more damage, she is taken down by Mary Drake and pulled away by "A.D." unseen. Mary then reveals that she is Spencer's biological mother.

In the midseason premiere, Emily and Paige are introduced to Rosewood High's staff as a swimming coach and athletic department supervisor, respectively, which causes Alison to feel jealous of Paige. Alison and Emily discuss Alison's jealousy toward Paige. Ultimately, Alison verbally fights with Paige during a school staff reunion, leaving things awkward. After, in "These Boots Were Made for Stalking", Emily is accused by high school student Addison Derringer (Ava Allan) of being inappropriate, while Addison gathers photos of Emily with Alison. Paige tries to solve the situation, but Emily ends up screaming at Addison; ultimately, Paige calls Addison's father and she's called to the Principal's room. Following, in "Hold Your Piece", Aria and Emily team up to investigate Sydney for more information about Jenna and her connection to "A.D".

Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists

Two-years have passed since the reveal of A.D. Emily and Alison have since gotten married and are still co-parents to their twin daughters. However, they still struggle to move beyond their complicated past. While they love each other and remain married, it has become hard for them to trust one another and figure out who they are without 'A'.

In the fourth episode, Alison received papers from the Rosewood County family and law courts. She ignored the papers along with the influx of missed calls and texts from Emily. When Mona finally confronted Alison, she explained that she saw a picture of Emily and the girls on Instagram that morning. Emily wasn't wearing her wedding ring, which she assumed meant that she had moved on. Mona helped her realize that if she had moved across the country she must have known how this was going to end, to which Alison admitted to convincing herself that Beacon Heights was the fresh start she thought would help her marriage.

A few days later, she texted Emily that she was sorry for having avoided her, but the last step had been really hard for her. She then tearfully signed the divorce papers and removed her wedding ring, setting it on the papers as she cried. She looked solemnly at a picture of her, Emily, and the twins on her mantle.

One of the main leads of the franchise, Hanna is a formerly overweight girl who becomes a queen-bee after the disappearance of Alison DiLaurentis.

Hanna is portrayed by Ashley Benson in the television series.

Hanna is one of four primary protagonists in all sixteen Pretty Little Liars novels, starting with Pretty Little Liars. All four girls attend the same school.

Prior to the start

Before Alison DiLaurentis disappears, Hanna is shown as a shy girl with an eating disorder. She is best friends with Alison DiLaurentis along with Spencer Hastings, Aria Montgomery and Emily Fields. Like the other girls, Hanna and Alison had a secret between them: Alison witnessed Hanna purging with a toothbrush when she thought she was overweight. During the last night of the 7th grade, while having a sleepover in Spencer's sister Melissa's barn, Alison disappeared.

Years later, in the 9th grade, Hanna tried out for cheerleading but didn't make it, since the cheerleaders considered her too fat and not pretty enough to be in the squad. Hanna and Mona Vanderwaal, a girl that Hanna and her friends used to make fun of for being dorky, decided to become skinny and pretty before next year's cheerleading tryouts. They bonded and became pretty and popular, eventually deciding that cheerleading wasn't even cool enough to try out for. Hanna took over Alison's spot as the most popular girl after Alison's disappearance. Within that time, Hanna and Mona also became shoplifters.

Rivalries and friendships

Shoplifting with Mona gives her a “Bad girl” feel, but when she is caught, her mother realizes that Hanna is doing this to get her father's attention following his leaving the family. When she is caught by the police, Hanna struggles with the fact that her mother, Ashley, is the main factor of the removal of her charges—Ashley maintained a sexual relationship with Officer Darren Wilden in order to keep clean the image of her family. In addition, the old group of friends, of which Hanna was a member in the ninth grade, reunites, causing tension between her friendship with Mona. Hanna also has to deal with the threats and the danger of possibly having her secrets revealed by the tenebrous "A." Hana navigates heartbreak, hurt, a broken leg (courtesy of "A"), and more. Being accepted into her choice of college, Hanna scrambles to collect enough money when her father refuses to pay for her education. She, along with the other girls, are being transported to prison when they are abducted and held captive by "A" in a species of house for hostages.

Season 6

Following the events in which 'A' kidnapped Hanna and her friends on their way to the prison and imprisoned them in the Dollhouse, Hanna shows symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, and she relieves herself through anger. After a collapse, she destroys her bedroom and temporarily breaks up with Caleb; plus, she does not want to be overly protected anymore and decides to find out once and for all who "A" really is. She starts investigating with Spencer and gets a list of suspects. However, none of her suspects is the real one. The second person behind the "A'" mask is revealed to be CeCe Drake. Afterwards, she graduates and moves to New York City with Caleb, who pays her fee for the NY Fashion Institute of Technology. Hanna embarks into a life that focuses on fashion shows, in which Caleb doesn't seem to fit. These fights drive them apart, and they break up once again. Years later, Hanna, along with her friends, returns to Rosewood. She is now engaged to Jordan and Caleb is dating Spencer, thus making Hanna uncertain and confused, since she still has feelings for her former boyfriend. With her wedding plans moving forward, she questions again if her fiancé is the right decision. As a new stalker is starting to get more dangerous, she and Caleb come up with a trap in which Hanna represents the bait. Knowing the risks, she admits her true feelings for Caleb, and they kiss. Seasons

1–7

Spencer is known in the fictional town of Rosewood for her sophisticated charm, intelligence, hardheadedness, and, at times, dangerous dedication to achieve her life goals. She is part of the very wealthy, powerful Hastings family; Spencer's parents, Veronica and Peter, are both linked to politics and her sister, Melissa is an almost-equally accomplished grad student.

For her role as Spencer, Bellisario was nominated thrice for Choice Summer TV Star: Female (winning once) and twice for Choice TV Actress: Drama (winning once) in the Teen Choice Awards.

Spencer is one of four primary protagonists in all sixteen of the Pretty Little Liars novels, starting with 2006's Pretty Little Liars. She is portrayed as a competitive girl who strives for perfection in everything she does. Spencer is willing to do whatever it takes to win, often to the detriment of herself and others. She is known to have a dark side and suffers from rage-induced black outs, which leads her to question whether she had anything to do with the death of her friend Alison. She also exhibits symptoms of OCD but it is never confirmed whether she has the disorder.

In later books, Spencer is briefly addicted to drugs, which she takes to help her improve her grades at a University of Pennsylvania summer school. It is also revealed that her father had an affair with Jessica DiLaurentis around the time of Spencer's conception, making her the half-sister of Alison and Courtney DiLaurentis.

Spencer has an ongoing rivalry with her older sister, Melissa, who is equally competitive. The two slowly come to an understanding and eventually have an improved relationship.

Relationships

Ian Thomas: Spencer and Ian kissed while he was dating Melissa and their flirtation was condemned by Alison, who threatened to expose it to Melissa.

Wren Kim: Wren is Melissa's fiancé who moves into the Hastings' barn with Melissa. He and Spencer flirt, culminating in them kissing and being caught by Melissa, who breaks up with Wren and kicks him out. Spencer and Wren continue to secretly date, but eventually break up. In the final book, Spencer reconnects with Wren and they begin a relationship, with Melissa's blessing.

Colin DeSoto: A handsome young man that Spencer and Melissa meet with they are visiting their grandparents in the companion novel Pretty Little Secrets. Spencer and Melissa compete for his affections but when they find out that Colin is actually a 33-year-old married man with a child, they team up to get back at him by spiking his soda water with Viagra before a tennis match.

Chase and Curtis: After enlisting a blogger's help in finding "A", Spencer meets with blogger Chase and they share a mutual romantic attraction. However, she later discovers that the guy she thought was Chase was actually his brother, Curtis. She meets the real Chase at the end of the novel; though they do not begin an official relationship, it is implied that they will stay in touch. Throughout the final book, the two become closer during their mission to take down "A" and her accomplice.

Characterization

Spencer is similar to her book counterpart: she is portrayed as a highly ambitious, intelligent young woman from a wealthy family who frequently competes with her older sister Melissa for accolades and the approval of their parents. However, in the show, Spencer is portrayed as more emotional and sentimental, and more humorous than her book counterpart. She's the most academically gifted of her friends, and in the running for valedictorian. Spencer is on the Rosewood Day field hockey team, and plays tennis at her family's country club. She was the only one who could ever stand up to Alison, although she still deferred to Alison.

Relationships

Before the series' chronology, Spencer had a brief affair with Ian Thomas, her sister's boyfriend at the time. Ian and Spencer kissed and Alison saw them together, and later she threatened to tell Melissa. It was later revealed that Alison asked Ian to kiss Spencer. In season one, Spencer flirts with Melissa's fiancé, Wren Kingston when he moves into the Hastings home and the two are caught kissing by Melissa. She ends her engagement with Wren and refuses to speak to him or Spencer. An apologetic Spencer attempts to reunite Wren and Melissa but he tells her that he wishes he could have met her before Melissa. Spencer then dates Alex Santiago after they met at her family's country club but A sabotages their relationship and the two break up.

Spencer is initially suspicious of Toby Cavanaugh's role in Alison's death and they begin a friendly relationship in the second half of the first season, which eventually becomes romanticTheir relationship is stable until A threatens Toby's life to Spencer and she decided to end things to keep him safe.[10] After breaking up with Toby, Spencer seeks out Wren but their reconciliation is short-lived.Spencer reunites with Toby when she discovers he has been working separately to take A down. However, it is later revealed that Toby was actually working with A, causing Spencer break up with him.[After Toby dies, Spencer is distraught and begins to question whether he was working with A. She eventually learns that Toby is still alive and he explains that he was working with A as a double-agent and faked his death but his allegiance was always with Spencer and The Liars. They then happily reconcile.

In season 5, Toby joins the Rosewood police force, which strains his relationship with Spencer. Spencer wants to use his police resources to find "A" while Toby prefer to maintain a separate work/life balance, causing the two to break up again. Spencer then begins a flirtation with Jonny Raymond, an artist renting out the Hastings' guest house. He eventually leaves town after being arrested for theft.[17] Spencer then has a fling with Colin when she is visiting London with Melissa.[18] In season 6, when Spencer returns to Rosewood, she and Toby resume their relationship. In the mid-season finale, Spencer attends Georgetown University. She has a pregnancy scare and she and Toby realize they want different things in their lives, leading to their break up.

Following the series' five years jump in season 6, Spencer dates Caleb Rivers but they later break up due to Caleb's feelings for Hanna. In the series finale, Spencer and Toby rekindle their relationship and in Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, it is mentioned that she and Toby eloped.

Season 1

Spencer Hastings is a preppy, ambitious, and competitive student who strives for perfection due to her parents' high expectations. She is resentful of her older sister Melissa, to whom she is always compared. Spencer is attracted to her sister's fiancé, Wren, whom A warns Spencer to stay away from. Wren kisses Spencer and they are caught by Melissa, who insists that Wren move out. Melissa is angry and resentful towards Spencer afterwards. Spencer feels especially guilty because years earlier, she flirted with Melissa's boyfriend Ian and he kissed her, culminating in his break up with Melissa. She attempts to help Wren reconcile with Melissa but both parties are uninterested.

Spencer starts dating Alex Santiago who works at her family's country club. Her mother initially dislikes him, but later reveals it is because she is embarrassed that she drunkenly revealed her breast cancer scare to him. Alex confides in Spencer that he had received an invitation to a prestigious tennis clinic but was uninterested in pursuing it. A sends Alex's application to the clinic and fakes messages that Spencer sent the application, which causes Alex to break up with her, believing that Spencer betrayed his trust.

Spencer is the most suspicious and paranoid of the group, and she opposes Emily's friendship with Toby. But after the two spend time together in a motel room in the episode "Person of Interest", the two begin a romantic relationship. Spencer's family disapproves of their relationship and "A" also conspires to keep them apart. Nevertheless, Spencer insists on staying with Toby.

Ian returns to Rosewood as Spencer's field hockey coach and he reconciles with Melissa, which makes Spencer nervous given their past relationship. Spencer becomes concerned when Melissa and Ian suddenly elope and Melissa becomes pregnant, especially after it is revealed that Alison had a secret relationship with Ian, making him a suspect in her murder.

Spencer and the rest of the Liars strongly begin to believe that Ian was Alison's murderer and he realizes that Spencer knows about his relationship with Alison. The two have a tense relationship and Ian successfully convinces the Hastings family that Spencer's erratic behavior is due to jealousy of him and Melissa. Spencer sends anonymous text messages to Ian, threatening to expose him. When Spencer and Melissa get into a car accident, Spencer goes back to the church to get Melissa's phone, where Ian is waiting. He reveals that he knows Spencer is behind the messages and attempts to kill her but he is then attacked by a mysterious figure, who then kills Ian. The rest of the Liars join Spencer and call the police but when the police arrive, Ian's body is gone.

A flashback reveals that Spencer and Alison got into a major argument on the night of her disappearance, suggesting Spencer is also a suspect in Alison's murder.

Season 2

The police do not believe the Liars' version of events and believe Ian has gone missing. Spencer learns that someone has been texting Melissa from Ian's phone, pretending that he is still alive. Spencer is concerned for Melissa, especially after her miscarriage, but Melissa is distrustful of Spencer. The two eventually reconcile after they discover Ian's body and Melissa finally accepts that he is dead.

Spencer and Toby are still dating in season 2. While doing yard work for the Hastings, Toby digs up Spencer's old field hockey stick which she gave to Alison before she died. Spencer's father, Peter, sees this and quickly takes the stick, and later burns it. Spencer becomes suspicious and after doing some further investigating, she reads Alison's autopsy results and finds that she was struck in the head with an object similar to a field hockey stick. She discovers that Peter did something illegal for the DiLaurentis family and worries that her father covered up her involvement in Alison's murder.

After "A" sends a threatening message about Toby, Spencer decides that the best way to keep Toby safe is to break up with him despite his declaration of love for her. Spencer tries to remain friends with him but he rebuffs her attempts.

Spencer becomes suspicious of Jason DiLaurentis, especially when she and Emily break into his shed and find pictures of Aria. In episode 19, she discovers Peter had an affair with Jessica DiLaurentis and Jason is her half-brother. The reveal divides their family and a distraught Spencer rekindles her romance with Wren as a distraction.

Spencer continues to investigate A and thinks the Black Swan from the episode "UnmAsked" is A. In the season finale, she discovers A's lair and learns that Mona is A. She is attacked by Mona and they get into a struggle in which Spencer accidentally pushes Mona off of a cliff, almost killing her. The police arrive alongside Toby, who tells Spencer that he still loves her. The season ends with the two reconciled.

Season 3

Summer has passed since the unveiling of A but Spencer is determined to uncover the Black Swan, whom she believes is another A still working with Mona. She eventually discovers it was Melissa, who claims that she was blackmailed into showing up at the masked ball. Spencer decides to believe her, but is still suspicious. Meanwhile, she and Toby grow closer and the two eventually have sex for the first time. However, Spencer begins to suspect that Toby is not on their side. When Hanna finds the key to "A"'s new lair and gives it to Spencer, Spencer sets a trap for Toby. She catches him trying to steal it while wearing A's signature jacket, proving he is a member of the A-Team, conspirators who are aligned with A. She breaks up with him, but doesn't tell her friends why.

Spencer gives the key to a private investigator and gives him a picture of Toby and her, before ripping it in half. She tells the private investigator to follow Toby. After breaking up with Toby, Spencer begins to withdraw from her friends, and becomes emotionally unstable. She becomes obsessed with finding A and the mysterious person in the red coat. In the episode "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" she follows Mona into the woods and discovers what appears to be Toby's dead body. Spencer attempts to chase Mona but gets lost in the woods. In the morning, she is found by a hiker in a catatonic state and is admitted to the Radley Sanitarium. Mona visits her in the sanitarium and offers to let Spencer join the A-Team. In the episode "I'm Your Puppet," Spencer accepts her offer.

In the Season 3 finale "A Dangerous GAme", Spencer comes up with a plan to trap the Red Coat and reveals to the Liars that she is working for the A-Team as a double agent. Toby contacts Spencer, revealing that he is alive. He explains that he joined the A-Team to protect her and the two make up and have sex. As part of the plan, Spencer hosts a party at a lodge where the girls are supposed to meet the Red Coat, when an unknown figure starts a fire, trapping Aria, Hanna, Emily, and Mona in the burning house. Toby leads Spencer into the woods to see who the Red Coat is. Spencer sees a helicopter land in the woods and the Red Coat step off. Spencer catches a glimpse of her face and believes to have seen Alison. The Red Coat rescues the Liars from the burning house and Hanna and Mona also believe to have seen Alison. The group drives back to Rosewood and see Wilden's car dug up from the lake. All of them, including Mona, get a text from A.

Season 4

Spencer and her friends continue to be tormented by A. Ashley Marin is arrested for Wilden's murder and Spencer's mother Veronica Hastings is her defense attorney. Spencer gives Hanna and her mother emotional support in the lead up to the trial. She also supports Toby in finding out the truth about his mother even though she does not approve of him trusting A for clues.

In the midseason finale, Spencer and her friends go to Ravenswood after receiving a puzzling clue from A. There, she and her friends discover that there are two Red Coats. One is revealed to be CeCe Drake and Spencer chases the other Red Coat, who leads her to A's apartment. Spencer and the others search the apartment and deduce the owner is a male. In the episode "Grave New World" the Liars learn that A believe Alison will be returning to Ravenswood on the night of the graveyard party. While looking for Alison, the Liars becomes separated while searching an old house. Spencer comes across A and tries to unmask him but is knocked out. It is later revealed that Ezra is the male A. Giving up on their search, the Liars return Spencer's car and discover her tires are slashed. Ezra suddenly arrives and give them a ride home. Back at Spencer's, the Liars see the Red Coat and follow her into Spencer's garden. The Red Coat is revealed to be Alison, who is not dead.

Following this, Spencer tries even harder to work out who A is in order to make it safe for Alison to come home. Overwhelmed by both her investigation and school work, she begins abusing amphetamines. It is revealed that she had abused amphetamines before and was addicted to them the summer prior to Ali's disappearance. This leads her to begin to question her own role in the death of the girl in Ali's grave that night. She eventually ends up being sent to rehab by her parents, and upon getting out, she meets Alison in New York. Alison assures her that while they did argue on the night of her disappearance, Spencer went back to sleep and had nothing to do with the murder.

Season 5

With Alison's return, Spencer has a hard time getting used Alison's domineering attitude. Spencer struggles with the idea of her father being the killer of Jessica DiLaurentis. Spencer's rivalry with her sister Melissa is put to an end when Melissa reveals that she's the one who buried Bethany Young, in order to protect Spencer. Later, Spencer is arrested for Bethany's murder; however, she was released shortly after when the P.D. gets convinced that Alison is the one who is really responsible. Toby becomes a cop, which makes his relationship with Spencer tough, since Spencer wants him to share all the information the police has, but Toby starts to prefer keeping his work and personal life private. The love drought leads Spencer to other men — Jonny and Colin. Spencer and Melissa's relationship gets awkward again when Melissa lies to Spencer. In the season finale, Spencer and the others are arrested as accomplices to Mona's murder; however, on the way to prison, their van is hijacked by "A." and they get taken to A's 'DollHouse'

Season 6

In the aftermath of the Liars' abduction orchestrated by "A," Spencer's old addiction surfaces again in order to relieve stress. A sleep disorder also recur due to the torture she had faced while being trapped in A'S Dollhouse, and it heavily intensifies the addiction, making Spencer ask for help from Dean, and old counselor, and Sabrina, the new-in-charge at the Brew who gives Spencer brownies with marijuana. Spencer starts to investigate who's behind the Carissimi Group and who Charles is. Meanwhile, her relationship with Toby remains untouchable. In the mid-season finale, it is revealed that CeCe Drake is "A," and the Liars finally gets peace.

Afterwards, Spencer moves to Georgetown in order to get involved with a future political career in Washington, D.C., and ends up in a lobbyist career. She returns to Rosewood five years later at Alison's request, and also to depose on Charlotte's release from psychological hospital. It is revealed that during the five last years she and Toby broke up because of the distance and the different future plans, and, following, she started a thrilling flirt with Caleb Rivers. Having to stay in Rosewood after Charlotte was murdered, she starts working on her mother's election campaign for Senate, while the daughter of the other candidate is Yvonne Phillips, Toby's current girlfriend. Spencer finds out that Charlotte was killed in a copycat manner off a murder she wrote an essay about in college, leading her to start thinking that the police could blame her for Charlotte's death.

A new stalker, now entitled as "A.D.", surfaces, resulting in tension. When a document about Yvonne's mother leaks and Caleb takes the blame, Spencer goes crazy, and Toby fights with him. Spencer, along with the other Liars, Caleb, Mona and Toby, elaborate a plan to take "A.D." down, but everything goes down when the stalker kidnaps Hanna.

Season 7

In "The Darkest Knight", Spencer is shot by Uber A during the attack by Jenna and Noel. As Jenna is preparing to shoot her again, out of revenge for her and Charlotte, Mary Drake comes in and knocks Jenna out. Mary then cradles Spencer's body and reveals that she is indeed Spencer's mother, making Spencer the biological sister of Cece Drake. In season 7b, Spencer and the other liars receive a big board game called "Liar's Lament", and in the episode "These Boots Are Made For Stalking", it is revealed that Spencer is Mary Drake's second child. In the last half of the last episode, we find out that Spencer was locked up inside a "cell". While the "Spencer", who we saw kissing Toby and then having sex with, was actually Alex Drake, her twin sister, also known as A.D.. Alex, jealous of Spencer, wanted to have everything she never had, a family, friends, and even Toby, who she had "fallen in love with", so she kidnapped the real Spencer, pretending to be her all the time. And through the flashbacks, we are shown when Alex Drake impersonates her sister. It was Alex, not Spencer, who was with Hanna when Hanna was kidnapped. In the flashbacks, we are shown some examples of when Alex has "played" Spencer. Alex was the one who asked Toby for "one last kiss, just to say goodbye" in "The DArkest Knight". Spencer and Ezra, who had been kidnapped as well, escaped the cell, but soon were trapped with Alex. Spencer and Alex fought until the Liars plus Toby and Caleb found them. Both pleading to be the "real" Spencer, Toby figures out who the real Spencer is by asking what is her favorite poem in the book she gave him in "The DArkest Knight". The real Spencer responds with the correct response and Alex is arrested along with Mary Drake. Spencer and Toby resume their relationship and start dating again at the end of the series.

Aria is well known for her longtime relationship and eventual marriage with Ezra Fitz.

The character is portrayed by Lucy Hale in the television series.

Characterization

In the book series, Aria is described as gorgeous, tall, lean with short blue-black hair, startling ice-blue eyes and an angular face. Aria is artsy and imaginative, has a hipster style, and a passion for knitting and writing. She is also described as Rosewood's 'weird girl'.

On another interview with ClevverTV.com, Lucy Hale said, "She’s like an old soul with an espectacular body and she knows what she wants… she’s very cool, she’s got it put together." While also commenting on her style: "She’s sort of all over the place… she’s the quirkiest one and just put miss-match pieces together and mixes vintage stuff with modern things… very funky… very creative.".

Novels

Aria is one of four primary protagonists in all fourteen of the Pretty Little Liars novels, starting with 2006's Pretty Little Liars. She is the daughter of Byron and Ella Montgomery and has a younger brother, Mike.

Before Pretty Little Liars

Before Alison DiLaurentis disappeared, Aria is shown to have a quirky personality and a penchant for knitting. She is best friends with Alison 'Ali' DiLaurentis along with Hanna Marin, Spencer Hastings, and Emily Fields. Like the other girls, Aria and Alison had a secret between them; they witnessed Aria's father, Byron, cheating on her mother with one of his students, Meredith, and he begs Aria not to tell anyone. During the night of the last of 7th grade, while having a sleepover in Spencer's sister Melissa's barn, Alison disappeared. Not long after Ali's disappearance, Aria's father moves his family to Iceland in an attempt to hide the affair from Aria's mother, Ella.

Pretty Little Liars

In the first novel, Aria and her family return from Iceland, moving back into their old house in Rosewood, Pennsylvania. She, Hanna, Spencer, and Emily have grown apart since Alison's disappearance. Since the three year jump, Aria has now blossomed into a beautiful and confident young woman. She meets Ezra Fitz at a local bar and they connect; hooking up in the girls bathroom. She later finds that after all her time in Iceland, formerly overweight Hanna is now thin, glamorous, and best friends with former nerdy outcast, Mona Vanderwaal. When she begins school she finds that Ezra is also her new AP English teacher. Aria later begins to receive texts and emails from an unknown source that reveals secrets that only Ali knew and more recent ones, including Byron's affair with Meredith and Aria's with Ezra, signed, "A". When Alison's body is discovered under a block of cement, she, along with the other three girls, receive a text at the memorial service, "I'm still here bitches, and I know everything." signed, "A".

Flawless

The unknown identity of "A", and suspicions that Byron may be seeing Meredith again, cause Aria to feel uncertain about her future. She goes to Meredith's yoga class after receiving the address from "A". Which causes her to feel worse about keeping her father's affair a secret. After almost getting herself into a car accident, she runs into Hanna's ex-boyfriend Sean Ackard. He goes with her to confront Meredith, who bluntly says that she and Byron are in love, and nothing will break them up. Sean and Aria's relationship turns romantic, and they go to the local Foxy benefit. When Aria returns home, she discovers that "A" sent her mother a letter detailing her father's affair, and the fact that Aria knew all about it.

Season 1

The series begins with a flashback in a barn where four girls Aria, Hanna, Spencer, and Emily are having a sleepover; they are surprised by their best friend and queen bee Alison DiLaurentis, who frightens them by causing creaking noises outside the barn as a practical joke. The five girls gossip and share secrets before falling asleep. When they awake, they realize that two of the girls are gone, Spencer and Ali. They run into Spencer, who tells them Ali is missing and that she heard a scream.

One year later, Aria and her family have returned home to Rosewood after a year of living in Iceland. Aria still feels troubled over her best friend's disappearance, which concerns both her parents who encourage her to reconnect with her old friends. However, Aria sees through her dad's concerns and reassures him that she is still keeping his secret. She drops her brother off at lacrosse and stops off at a Bar and Grill, where she meets a man named Ezra, who mistakes her for a college girl and informs her that he will soon be starting a new teaching post. The two feel an instant connection and end up hooking up in the bathrooms.

In a conversation with her father, we see flashbacks of Aria and Alison catching her dad making out with another woman in the back of his car. Aria begins to reunite with her old friends, mainly Emily, at school and discovers that Ezra is in fact her new English teacher, Mr Fitz. After an awkward moment, Aria receives a text message from an unknown “A” which reads "Aria: Maybe he fools around with students all the time. A lot of teachers do. Just ask your dad. -A". Aria attempts to continue her relationship with Mr Fitz, but he rejects her telling her everything has changed. However, they rekindle their romance at Ali's funeral, which is held after her body is discovered under the DiLaurentis' gazebo, which was being ready to build right before her disappearance. After one kiss, however, Aria leaves Ezra. Aria meets up with Emily and in turn Hanna and Spencer at the funeral, and they reveal that each have received a message from the mysterious A. The police now reveal that the girls need questioning again as they are now looking at a murder case, before they each receive a text. "I'm still here, bitches. And I know everything. -A".

Aria and her friends continue to be tormented by the anonymous “A”, who seems to know all the secrets they told Ali, including the secret surrounding a mysterious blind girl named Jenna Marshall. When Jenna joins them at their lunch table, her presence triggers a flashback to the night of the unknown “Jenna Thing”. The four girls and Alison were having a sleepover and trying on each other's clothes when Alison claimed to have seen Toby Cavanaugh spying on them through her window. To get revenge, Alison and the girls plant a stink bomb in his house. However, it caused the garage to explode, presumably causing Jenna to lose her sight, a fact that Jenna seems determined to hang over their heads.

Aria continues her illicit affair with Ezra, while trying to come to terms with her father's own affair. “A” continues to taunt the girls in every aspect of their lives. They try to block them out of their lives by putting blockers on their e-mail accounts and their cell phones, but “A” appears to be too smart, even breaking into Spencer's house and ends up sending a detailed letter to Aria's mother, Ella, telling of her husband's affair, which leaves Ella devastated, and Aria guilty for keeping it from her.

A meeting with Hardy, an old college friend of Ezra's, as well as an untimely message from “A”, brings home to Ezra the reality of his relationship with Aria and he eventually ends it at their school homecoming leaving Aria heartbroken. After which he leaves Rosewood, and Aria discovers he has gone to New York to look for another job. Aria must attempt to move on from the breakup with Ezra.

Aria's parents argue and eventually separate over her father's affair, with her mom moving out of the house and into an apartment above her art gallery. Noel Khan, a boy Aria used to have a crush on, asks her out. She declines at first, but eventually accepts when the school's SATs are cancelled and they have to take shelter due to a hurricane warning in which Ezra makes his return and tells Aria that she was all he thought about."I thought about you every second I was gone. But I also thought about the consequences."[9] At Mona's “glamping” party, Ezra texts Aria to meet him near the party in his car. She does so and the two eventually end up kissing, this is spotted by Hanna, who has been surveying the area with binoculars, in an attempt to spot who “A” is. She apparently does, but before she can tell others, Hanna is hit by a car, and Aria reads a text from “A” who tells the remaining girls that “She knew too much. -A”.

In the second half of the first season, Aria realizes that Noel knows about her and Ezra's relationship and was the one who wrote I See You on the back of Ezra's car. She also tells Emily, Hanna, and Spencer about her affair with Ezra. Spencer takes her to a tree that has Alison + Ian carved on it, but someone had cut it down. She was also present when Melissa and Ian announce to Spencer that they got married. Ezra and Aria's relationship continues and Aria tells Ezra the truth about "The Jenna Thing." Aria finds out that Ezra was once engaged and his ex-fiancée was the one who ended it. Byron offers Ezra a job at Hollis and Ezra takes it after realizing that he and Aria can have a normal boyfriend and girlfriend relationship. Aria finds out that Ezra's ex-fiancée is also working at Hollis and that Ezra knew but didn't tell her about it.

Season 2

In the beginning of season two Aria's relationship with Ezra is on the verge of ending due to the revelation of his ex-fiancée, Jackie, working at the same college as him. Ezra clearly wants nothing more than to be with Aria and tries to show her that she is the only girl he's interested in. On his last day working at Rosewood, Ezra is packing up his belongings in his car when Aria runs and kisses him. She realizes that her and Ezra are meant to be together and that she loves him no matter what.

Aria and Ezra can now legally date since Ezra is no longer Aria's teacher, but they still face challenges in their relationship. They must find a way to tell their friends (except for Spencer, Hanna, and Emily, who already know) about their relationship. When Jason, Ali's older brother, returns to Rosewood, the girls suspect he is up to something nefarious. However, Aria ends up talking to Jason more after he promises not to tell the police about her brother Mike breaking into his house. Mike continues to break into houses and gets arrested, but is released when Aria's parents come to pick him up at the station. Mike becomes depressed and stays in his room, doing unknown activities, and Aria tries to help him but is unsuccessful. Aria finds herself thinking about Jason more and even has inappropriate dreams about him. She eventually tells Emily about these dreams, and Emily says that dreaming about someone means that the dreamer wants something from that person, not the other way around.

In the ninth episode, "Picture This", Jason kisses Aria and she doesn't exactly stop him. But she does tell him she's not available and walks away confused. Aria confides in Emily about her random relationship with Jason. Emily tells her that she needs to stay away from him and reminds her that she has Ezra, who she truly loves. Despite her feelings for Jason, Aria agrees and stays with Ezra.

At the college fair, Aria admits to Ezra that Jason kissed her and she didn't stop him. This leaves Ezra in shock but he isn't completely angry at Aria.

Spencer gets Emily to help her find out more about Jason and possibly his motives for coming back to Rosewood. They break into Jason's shed and find a red room full of pictures of Aria sleeping. They warn Aria about what they saw and she seems completely freaked out. Aria later confronts Jason about the photos of her and he claims that they were Ali's, so he wanted to develop them. Aria believes him, but is still unsure about his motives. She sees Jason at a restaurant and they begin to talk about what else Jason found of Ali's. Spencer and Toby see the two of them talking after Spencer and Emily both warned her about him, so Spencer decides that there is only one person Aria would listen to—Ezra. Spencer jumps into Ezra's car and Ezra looks shocked. Spencer tells him that she knows about him and Aria and that Aria is in danger. Ezra finds Aria in Jason's front yard and tells her that he doesn't want to lose her. He says he's ready to tell everyone about the two of them and Aria seems relieved and happy. When Jason comes back, he sees Aria and Ezra kissing. Aria tells him she has to go and Jason realizes Ezra is the reason why Aria is "unavailable". He lets her go and Aria rides away with Ezra. Later that night, Ella confronts Aria about rumors a while back about Ezra possibly having a relationship with one of his students. Aria seems shocked and doesn't know where her mom is going with it. Ella then tells her that she saw Spencer and Ezra in Mr. Fitz's car together, but Aria reassures her that they aren't seeing each other. Ella tells Aria that she would be devastated if she found out he was having a relationship with one of his students, but takes it back and says she would actually feel betrayed. This discourages Aria and makes her feel like maybe Ezra and her can't go public after all.

In the twelfth episode "Over My Dead Body", the liars receive a large box with chucky dolls inside. A tells them that if they don't do everything the dolls want them to do by 7pm, Dr Sullivan dies. Aria's chucky doll says that she must get Jackie to leave Hollis. She receives Jackie's paper which is about to get published and another paper identical to Jackie's. Jackie plagiarized her paper. When Aria attempts to do what A tells her to, Jackie tells her that she will not be leaving Hollis, but Aria will leave Ezra.

When Aria is arrested, Ezra comes to the police station and confesses to Ella that he loves her. Ella thinks Ezra is talking about Spencer and tells him that the Hastings parents will ruin him if they find out about the relationship. Aria breaks up with Ezra, but after one month, they meet in downtown Rosewood by accident. Aria later stops by his office to return a book, and Jackie comes in and tells her to stay away from him. Ezra walks in during their conversation, and Jackie leaves. Ezra tells Aria that they need to tell Aria's parents about what's been happening. When they do, Ella and Byron are extremely angry, and Mike punches Ezra, leaving Ezra with a bleeding lip. Ezra returns to his office where he talks with Jackie, and tells her that he is extremely angry with her.

A few days after that, Aria's dad, Byron, goes to Ezra's apartment and threatens him, saying that if Ezra will see Aria again, Byron will hand him over to the police. After that, Ezra stops answering Aria's phone calls, texts and E-mails. But Aria doesn't give up on him that easily. Aria is having a "date" with Holden, a childhood friend, but actually she is taking Holden to a play that she knows Ezra will go to. Holden understands she just wanted to see Ezra, he says he'll help her meet him, in return for her helping him with his secret, which is martial arts. After a few days, Aria leaves Ezra a message saying she'll be in front of the clock in Philadelphia and if he comes, it means they still have a chance. After he hears that message he decides to meet her at the clock, thus continuing their relationship in secrecy again. It is revealed in the next episode that no one but Holden knows about the rekindled romance and after a few days Aria also tells her friends about her relationship after being threatened by A . They continue seeing each other on Aria's "dates" with Holden, nearly being caught by Byron once. After he is fired, he tells Aria that he can't teach in that town anymore and must find a place where he can before they can start dating again. Ezra leaves Rosewood, but Aria keeps in touch with him.

In the final episode of Season 2, "unmAsked", Aria is at the masquerade ball. Ezra comes to and they reconcile, with Ezra telling her he wants to have his first dance with Aria, as a couple.

Season 3

Season 3 picks up five months after the liars discovered that Mona was A. It starts at a party at Spencer's where they discuss what they did in the summer.

Near the beginning of the season Aria meets Ezra's mother and younger brother Wesley Fitzgerald-who Aria shares a brief kiss with, (Gregg Sulkin). Wesley tells Aria about a girl called Maggie, (Larisa Oleynik) that Ezra got pregnant when he was younger. Wesley accidentally lets it slip after finding out his mother tried to pay Aria to "disappear" from her son's life, which is what she did to Maggie as she thought she ruined Ezra's life. Just before the mid-season finale of season 3, Aria discovers that Ezra has a son that he is unaware of with a woman named Maggie. Ezra always assumed Maggie got an abortion. Maggie asked Aria to keep it a secret.

In the Halloween episode Aria is kidnapped by A and nearly killed after being locked in a box with a dead Garrett Reynolds (Yani Gellman) and nearly being pushed out of a moving train onto the track, luckily Hanna, Spencer and Emily come to the rescue. After, Spencer accidentally tells Ezra about Maggie and that he has a 7-year-old son. Ezra leaves town and Wes and Aria develop a closer relationship. In Aria's bedroom, Wes kisses her before she tells him that they can't do this and he states that they can't and leaves.

Then Ezra comes back and Aria finds out that he isn't coming alone. Maggie and Malcom - his seven-year-old son - came along with him. Aria tries to cope with the fact that Ezra has a family now and their relationship has changed. Things become worse when Ezra decides to get back to teaching as he now has more responsibilities. Rosewood high rehires Ezra as an English teacher and Aria starts questioning her relationship with Ezra, especially after the headmaster asks her whether she is 'seeing' Ezra occasionally or not. Finally Aria feels she is not a part of Ezra's life anymore and she decides to break up with Ezra.

In the last episode of Season 3, "A Dangerous Game", the liars get trapped in a burning lodge with Mona Vanderwaal, who was formerly A. According to Hanna Marin and Mona Vanderwaal, it was Alison DiLaurentis who pulled them out.

Season 4

After breaking up with her boyfriend Ezra, Aria looks for ways to move on. She nearly gets hit by a car and decides to take up karate, where she meets a cute instructor named Jake and starts developing feelings for him. However, at the end of an episode, Jake is shown with punching bags and falls to the ground when someone puts knives in his punching bags. Aria also keeps an eye on her younger brother Mike, who starts dating Mona Vanderwaal, a person who bullied Aria in junior high. Mike gets upset with Aria and says that if she can forgive their dad, she should be able to forgive Mona. Aria's friends start to suspect Ezra is "A," the person who has been threatening and harassing them, but Aria disagrees and gets angry with them. However, Aria later discovers that Ezra knew her before they started dating and feels betrayed and used. The girls eventually receive a message from Alison, who reveals that she is alive and wants to tell them the truth. They go to New York and meet with Alison, who tells them that Ezra dated her before he met Aria. When "A" contacts the girls, they run to the top of a building and tell Alison that they think Jessica DiLaurentis is "A." Ezra shows up and protects the girls by taking a bullet for them.

Season 5

In Season 5, Aria and Ezra try to heal their relationship after he is shot by Shana in New York City. She kisses him and they have sex in Miss Me x 100 and decide to try and see where their relationship takes them. After Mona's "death" and Alison's arrest, Aria and Ezra both try to talk to Mike about her death, and Aria is shocked when he tells her that Mona faked her own death to catch 'A', but he believes that 'A' must have blackmailed her, which is why she hasn't returned. Aria and the other liars try to get Alison out of prison, but when Hanna is also arrested and evidence against them makes it look like they also committed the murder, things start to look down and Aria and the others are arrested for Mona's murder. A kidnaps them on their way to a prison in the Season 5 finale and traps them in his dollhouse, but the girls outsmart him, find Mona, and try to escape. But when they go outside, they find themselves where they were at the beginning: prisoners.

Season 6

In Season 6, Aria escapes A's dollhouse with the other liars, but is emotionally scarred from being tortured by Charles in the dollhouse. When she returns from the hospital, she finds out Andrew is suspected of kidnapping the girls, leading Aria to lie to the police by telling them that she saw Andrew's face in the dollhouse. After Andrew is found out not to be 'A', Aria must respond to the lies she told to the police, and deal with an extremely angry Andrew. Aria soon has flashbacks of herself in the dollhouse, one being when A forced her to cut and dye her hair. She finds the color applicator in the Hollis College's darkroom, which leads her to befriending a fellow photographer, Clark, and they soon become quick friends. Clark and Aria exchange photographs, and Aria reveals the pictures of the dolls in her bedroom. Once Aria leaves, she goes home to examine her photographs further, until she is interrupted by Byron. Finally, Aria opens up to her father about her experiences in the dollhouse and she finishes her story in tears. After overcoming many obstacles, "A" is revealed to be CeCe Drake and Aria leaves Rosewood to go to school in Savannah.

Five years after breaking up with Ezra, Aria is in a relationship with Liam, a co-worker at a publishing house. When Charlotte is killed, Aria must return to Rosewood and confront her past. Ezra has become isolated and depressed since the disappearance of his girlfriend Nicole, and is struggling to write a sequel to his best-selling book. Alison suspects that Aria had something to do with Charlotte's murder and a security tape emerges that could make Aria a suspect. The girls try to protect Aria by erasing the tape, but this only causes more problems. Aria begins to wonder if Ezra and Byron had a hand in Charlotte's murder, but eventually realizes she is mistaken. As the stalker's game becomes more dangerous, Aria is injured in a fire and ends up in the hospital. During this difficult time, Ezra supports Aria and she starts helping him write his book as he comes to terms with Nicole's loss. Aria's boss approves her as an author and in the spring finale, Ezra tells Aria that her boss loved the entire book. Aria then cheats on Liam by sleeping with Ezra.

Season 7

In Along Comes Mary, Ezra proposes to Aria who says she needs to think about it because of her part in the Rollins accidental murder when he is hit by Hanna Marin's car. However at the end of the Wanted: Dead or Alive, Ezra re-proposes when Aria tells him everything and she says yes. Of course with some help earlier from Hanna who says she and Ezra are just meant to be. Aria and Ezra plan to elope, but their plans are cancelled when Nicole is found alive. Aria and the Liars are then attacked by Noel and Jenna, the latter of whom is in league with Uber A and Spencer ends up being shot by Uber A.

In Power Play, Aria is contacted by "A.D." via video chat. They tell her they have her file from Jessica DiLaurentis and it contains a secret that would make Ezra choose Nicole over her. They later tell her to meet them and she goes to do so. She stumbles upon their limo at the location and the door opens. She steps inside and sees "A.D." sitting there. They reveal themselves as Sydney Driscoll, who claims to have shot Spencer and rescued Jenna from the blind school. Sydney offers Aria the chance to join the A-Team, and Aria realizes that Sydney has an earpiece in her ear, meaning that the driver is the real "A.D." and Aria confronts her. Sydney says that leaving Alison and coming to meet them was the first step towards Aria earning "A.D.'s" trust, but she still has a long way to go. "A.D." later texts Aria and asks her if she has made a decision yet.

In In the Eye Abides the Heart, Aria begins to work for "A.D." and gives them information about the Liars' discoveries. She later steals Lucas and Charlotte's comic book and hands it over to "A.D.", in exchange for a black A-Team hoodie.

In The Glove That Rocks the Cradle, Aria continues to work as the helper to "A.D." and eventually puts on the black hoodie and breaks into Alison's house as "A.D." on their behalf. She trashes the room and breaks the toys, leaving the "A" dolls hanging above the crib and slinging blood onto the side of it. Alison and Emily return home and Aria barely manages to escape. The Liars find the crib and deduce that "A.D." definitely has a helper, while Spencer finds Aria's earring in the room.

In Driving Miss Crazy, Aria's work as "A.D." helper continues when they send her to the Hastings residence to deliver a phone with a message that will play through their Bluetooth speakers. She later breaks into Alison's in her "A" uniform to retrieve her file and leave a puzzle piece on the board.

In Choose or Lose, Aria shreds the file, as her apartment is raided by the police, who have a search warrant. Her phone is confiscated but "A.D." gives her a new phone to collaborate with them on. They give her instructions to meet them in her "A" uniform and Mona overhears. She informs that others that she thinks Aria is on the "A.D."-Team and explains her theory about Aria being the one responsible for trashing the nursery and leaving the recording behind for "A.D." at Spencer's. Aria suits up her uniform and goes to meet with "A.D." and they tell her she looks good in the uniform. She hears a noise and follows it, only for the Liars catch her in the uniform. The Liars are furious with her for collaborating with "A.D." against them and force to walk back to the police station on her own. However, Aria's name is cleared, when "A.D." gifts her an alibi, in exchange for assistance. Aria later declares she is leaving the A-Team.

In "Till Death Do Us Part", it has been one year since the last episode, we first see Aria and Ezra on the set of a film studio where their book is being made into a movie. Before her wedding to Ezra, Aria finds out that she will not be able to have children making her believe she can no longer get married since Ezra wants a family. When she shares the unfortunate news with Ezra he consoles her and tells her that they have other options and confirms that he still loves her and wants to get married. After their rehearsal dinner at the Radley, Ezra begins discussing getting other opinions from fertility specialists. After Aria claims that she has already seen other fertility doctors Ezra becomes upset wondering why she did not tell him about the sooner. After telling him that she wanted to make sure she couldn't have children on her own before telling him he becomes upset asking her if he has so much trust in her why does she not have the same trust in him. Aria tells Ezra she loves him, he tells her he loves her too, but it is not the same as trusting him and he leaves. The next day Aria and the girls are in her dressing room when she comes out in her gown excited and ready to marry Ezra, however he does not show and sends her a text saying that he can not go through with the wedding. What Aria doesn't know is that Ezra has been captured by A.D. as has Spencer whose place has been taken by A.D (Alex Drake, Spencer's evil twin sister). When Toby realizes that "Spencer" (A.D posing as Spencer) is not the real Spencer, with the help from Jenna, he lets the other girls and Caleb know. With the help of Mona, who has only been pretending to be on A.D's side tells them the location of A.D.'s lair they rescue Ezra and Spencer. The next day Aria and Ezra happily get married. While the girls are saying goodbye, Aria shares her and Ezra's plans for their honeymoon as well as their plans to look at adoption agencies when they return.

In the Season 2 premiere It's revealed, Imogen changed her mind about letting Aria and Ezra adopt her daughter because she got a "weird vibe" from Ezra.

In episode 5, Tabby and Imogen break into Sullivan's office and go through the private practice files, finding some on Aria, Hanna Marin, Spencer Hastings, and Emily Fields.

Introduced in Pretty Little Liars as Hanna Marin's best friend, Mona initially harbors a grudge against the protagonists, using her intelligence and resources to torment them anonymously as "A". In the third season of the TV series, Mona gains a partner who eventually takes control from her. Afterward, she forms an unstable alliance with the protagonists, becoming a victim of her own creation. Considered the most knowledgeable character in the series,[1] Mona is versed in computer hacking, foreign languages, singing, empathy, and manipulation. Though introduced as a villainess, she eventually takes steps toward redemption. Mona is the first 'A' in the show and the book.

Initially a supporting player, the TV character gained much popularity among viewers and critics, drawing recognition from Entertainment Weekly, CNN, MTV, and others, prompting producers to expand her role. In March 2015, PrettyLittleLiars.com named Mona the greatest Pretty Little Liars character.[2] MTV also named her one of the best characters on television in 2014.[3] During the TV series' run, producer I. Marlene King acknowledged Mona as a "beloved character."[4] By the end of the show's run, Dana Getz of Bustle.com declared that Mona had become "the most important character in the series."

Mona Vanderwaal was introduced in the first four Pretty Little Liars novels. A teenage resident of Rosewood, Pennsylvania, she has white-blonde hair, light blue eyes, and a few freckles. She is a formerly unpopular girl who was teased by Alison DiLaurentis and her friends, longing to be in their group. After Alison went missing, Mona befriended Alison's friend Hanna Marin, and they reinvented themselves as the 'it' girls of Rosewood Day.

Pretty Little Liars

edit

Mona is introduced as Hanna Marin's best friend. She was initially considered nerdy, but together with Hanna she transformed into a beautiful 'it' girl during the summer three years prior. She is invited to Noel Kahn's beginning of the semester party, where she kisses his older brother, Eric. Whenever the school's mean girls, Naomi and Riley, say something mean about Hanna, Mona is there for her. Mona and Hanna get into numerous fights and arguments about Hanna's old friends, Emily, Aria and Spencer, because Mona thinks that she has been spending more time with them than with her.

Flawless and Perfect

edit

As Mona's birthday is coming up, she chooses Naomi, Riley, Hanna and some other girls to be her "next-in-lines" so she goes to buy dresses with them. She chooses champagne-colored dresses, but gets in a fight with Hanna, whom she accuses of sabotaging her birthday party. Later on, Hanna gets a package with the champagne-colored dress, and thinks it was Mona who sent it.

Happily, she puts it on and goes to Mona's party, even though the dress is too small. As she comes to the party, Naomi and Riley (who are in emerald dresses) give her weird looks, and when Mona comes out wearing the champagne-colored dress, Hanna realizes that "A" was the one who sent her the dress. Crying, she falls down and her dress rips, following the laughter of the party attendants, including Mona. Hanna tells Mona that she knows she got a liposuction because "A" sent her a message with the content, but Mona says that she should not believe everything she hears and calls her a liar. Later, Hanna gets a message from "A", but sees that it is not the usual blocked number. Even though she got a new phone and did not put in the phone-book yet, she recognizes the number and rushes to tell the girls, but gets hit by a car before she can do anything.

Unbelievable

After Hanna's car accident, Mona is there for her in the hospital every day, crying. When Hanna wakes up, Mona apologizes, making them friends again. Hanna cannot remember anything that happened at Mona's party, including the "who is A" part. Later, Mona gets in a fight with Lucas regarding a secret that she will not explain to Hanna. She gets a text message and tells Hanna that it is from a person named "A". Hanna has been getting the texts too and admits everything to Mona. Mona seems relieved and tells the other girls about it, too. As Spencer and Mona are on their way to the police station, Hanna remembers that "A" is Mona. The girls send a text message to Spencer, who tries to hide it, but Mona sees it and explains everything – how she discovered Alison's diary and found out all about her secret, and how she read that Alison was going to give Ian an ultimatum – either her or Melissa, bringing Mona to tell Spencer that Ian killed Alison. Mona tries to force Spencer to join her, but they get into a fight and Spencer pushes Mona to the Floating Man's Quarry, causing Mona to fall to her death. After that, Hanna is shaken up, is relieved to know who "A" is and who Alison's killer is. Mona is reported about in the news, and the residents of Rosewood find out about "A" and the Rosewood Stalker, who was also Mona. Hanna finds Mona's "A phone" and later deletes all the messages from Mona/"A" before handing it over to the police, protecting Mona because they were still best friends.

Mona came to be "A" when she found Alison's diary when the St. Germain's moved into the DiLaurentis' old house and threw away Alison's old possessions. It is unclear if she knew about the twins or not when she was "A".

Television series

Casting

In 2009, Pretty Little Liars was adapted into a television series. Janel Parrish initially auditioned for the role of Spencer Hastings, which went to Troian Bellisario.[6] The Hollywood Reporter later revealed that Parrish had won the role of Mona Vanderwaal. In March 2012, she was promoted from recurring to series regular for the third season.[8] In a 2014 interview, Parrish noted her fondness for the role she'd received, stating, "I'm in love with my character and in love with the show."

Characterization

"I'm constantly playing Mona like she knows something that other people don't know."

—Parrish on her portrayal

Mona is introduced as an alluring and witty teenager, whose full intelligence is gradually revealed as the series progresses.[10] It is eventually discovered that she can speak French, hack computers, sing, and do voice impressions.[6][10][11] Her high IQ is further established in the Season 3 episode "Mona-Mania", when she competes against rival Spencer Hastings in a high-school quiz game, and ultimately wins.

Mona was initially an unpopular girl in Rosewood who longed to be accepted into Alison DiLaurentis's clique and was continuously mocked by Alison. In the Season 2 finale, Alison's friends learn that Mona has used her talents to manipulate and torment them anonymously. It is also discovered that she has dissociative identity disorder, according to her doctor.

Season 1

After Alison's disappearance, Mona befriended Hanna and together they underwent an "extreme makeover". During the process they became best friends, as well as two of the most popular students. With her newfound popularity, Mona behaves similarly to Alison, constantly bullying Lucas Gottesman in the same sense Alison did and even telling Hanna that she will cut ties with her before she lets her drag her back down to the bottom. In the mid-season finale, Mona invites the Liars to her birthday party, but uninvites Hanna after "A" sends her a fake message. Hanna and Mona become enemies after this, until Mona begins feeling remorse after Hanna is hit by "A" in a car at the party. They rekindle their friendship but it gradually falls apart again when Mona attempts to break up Hanna's relationship with Caleb.

Season 2

She becomes romantically involved with Noel Kahn, much to Hanna's disapproval, but is later dumped by him for Jenna Marshall. She and Hanna eventually become best friends again and Mona tries to become accepting of Caleb. When "A" begins sending threatening notes to Mona, she grows closer to the Liars and becomes a part of their group. In "Unmasked", Mona is still helping the Liars, who haven't fully accepted her yet, and volunteers to drive Spencer out to the Lost Woods Resort where they find "A's" lair. Here, it is revealed that "A" is actually Mona herself, who claims that she became "A" because of the Liars taking Hanna away from her and never doing anything to prevent Alison's bullying. She and Spencer get into a fight near a cliff and Mona is accidentally pushed off. She survives, however, and is committed to the Radley Sanitarium, after being diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder. Here, she is approached by someone, who wants to start a partnership and form an "A" Team.

Parrish, who had learned of "A's" identity in the novels, revealed she was pleased that the situation had not been changed in the TV series.

Season 3

Mona joins forces with a girl known as Red Coat and begins recruiting people for the "A" Team, including Toby Cavanaugh and Lucas Gottesman, while still staying at Radley. At Radley, Mona secretly gives answers to Hanna concerning Maya's death. Possibly unbeknownst to Big "A", she secretly gives Maya's website to Hanna in code, leading the Liars to eventually discover that Nate killed Maya. She is eventually released from Radley and returns to Rosewood High. She also recruits Spencer Hastings to join the team. In the finale, Mona reveals that she doesn't know the identity of Red Coat. She divulges to the Liars that Red Coat approached her in Radley and gave her a way in and out of Radley. Mona claims that the two of them were initially partners, and Mona considered it fun playing the game with someone else, but Red Coat eventually stole the Liars from her and took over. Mona later gets kicked off the "A" Team, becoming a victim of the monster she created and reluctantly joining the Liars.

Season 4

Mona is still allied with Liars until she begins helping Ezra Fitz with his book, because he blackmailed to expose her illegal "A" activities. She also begins dating Mike Montgomery, so that she may get closer to Aria, but actually falls for him during the process. In the finale, Alison reveals that Mona helped her the night she went missing and convinced her to go into hiding, giving Mona what she always wanted: Alison gone.

Season 5

Upon finding out that Alison is returning, Mona starts an army of Alison haters to prepare for her return. The team consists of Lucas, Melissa, Jenna, Sydney, and others treated badly by Alison. In the mid-season finale, she is supposedly killed by "A" after acquiring information that proves Alison is the alleged anonymous tormentor. In the second half of the season, it is revealed that Mona never believed Alison was "A" and that she faked her death as part of "A's" plan to get Alison into jail, so that she could find out their true identity. She now has blonde hair and is locked inside "A's" dollhouse, being forced to pretend to be Alison.

Season 6

In "Game On, Charles," Mona is locked outside of the dollhouse along with the other Liars as a punishment for trying to escape. They are eventually let back in the dollhouse but Mona is taken away by "A" and taken to the hole, while the other girls experience their own personal torture. Alison, Ezra and Caleb unite in a plan which leads to rescue. Mona's mother takes her away from Rosewood to recuperate from the trauma of the experience.

Mona returns to Rosewood in "She's No Angel" and is nervous of what Alison will do to her after learning that she staged her death and framed her for it. She arrives at Hanna's house and they decide to go to the police station to report her return. They stop off at the Grill on the way and encounter Leslie. Leslie is not happy that Mona mentioned her name in her fake death and threatens both Hanna and Mona if her name is mentioned to do with Mona ever again. Later in the episode Spencer sees Mona posting a card into Alison's letterbox. Spencer asks Mona if she was in a room that appeared in Spencer's dream of the dollhouse. Mona says that it must exist in her head. The girls sneak into Radley to see if there is any evidence of Charles Dilaurentis. While there, they encounter Mona who is stealing Leslie's file. Mona tells the other girls that she met Leslie in Radley. This enforces the girls theory that Leslie is "A". At the end of the episode Mona is seen on the phone to Leslie saying that she failed to keep her time in Radley a secret. Leslie said that Mona is useless and messes everything up like usual.

Mona appears at the ending of "No Stone Unturned". The Liars are investigating around Leslie's animal lab to see what she is hiding when suddenly the lights go out and Mona emerges. The girls ask why Mona is following them again and she explains that she is trying to stop the lab from suing them. Spencer shows Mona the records that Charles is dead and was a liver donor. Mona says that it is impossible that Charles was a liver donor because he would not have been an eligible donor with all the medication he was on. The security guard comes by the door and the girls turn off the light and Mona also hides.

In "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou," Mona and the Liars go to Mona's bedroom expecting to meet Leslie. Leslie texts Mona to tell her that she will not be coming to meet them as confrontations could set her recovery back. Aria thinks that they should drive over to Leslie's house because she knows more about Charles than she is letting on. Mona says that if Leslie knew more about Charles then she would have told her. Later in the episode Mona and Mike reconcile with each other, but she thinks that he should stay away from her because she deserved to be in the dollhouse. Mike ends this by kissing Mona passionately. Alison gets a lift from Mona. Alison says that Mona was the only one that picked up the phone to her. Alison calls the police and confesses that Charles Dilaurentis is "A" and her brother. Mona says she shouldn't have done that.

In "Game Over, Charles," it is revealed that CeCe Drake is Big "A". She joined forces with Mona to get in and out of Radley and took on the Red Coat disguise as well. She also hired Sara Harvey to act as Red Coat whenever she needed her to be, and Sara was the person who was communicating with Mona the night of the Lodge fire. It is also revealed that Mona is the person who hit Bethany Young with a shovel, believing her to be Alison.

Five years later, Mona returns to Rosewood to testify CeCe's release from a mental hospital. She later decides that CeCe should be released from the hospital. Mona reconnects with Hanna and gets into a fashion business with her.

Season 7

In the final season, Mona teams up with the others against the new "A", known as "A.D.". Mona helps them figure out that Aria is on the "A.D." Team. However, Mona is revealed to be Charlotte Drake's killer. She and Charlotte/CeCe got into a fight in the Bell Tower, after Mona threatened her. Mona accidentally pushed Charlotte into a sharp piece of metal on the wall, killing her. During the series finale, "A.D." sends Wren in her place to kill Mona, but Mona offers to join the "A.D." Team instead and works with Uber "A" against the girls, wearing a Melissa mask and delivering Spencer to them. However, she figures out that Spencer's twin, Alex Drake, is "A.D." and hatches a plan. She helps the Liars thwart Alex's plans and brings a police officer to arrest her and Mary. However, the "officer" is actually Mona's French boyfriend and Mona and her new boyfriend have brought Mary and Alex to France to live in her own personal Dollhouse, underneath the doll shop she owns, thus revealing that Mona has won the "A" game and is the final and ultimate "A". Appearing in the penultimate segment, she is the last of the longtime characters to be seen in the series, surpassing even the Liars, prior to an epilogue.
